This book was so disturbing but I LOVED it. Scott Smith has such a gift for just telling the story...balls to the wall, no stopping, the story just contines to steam roll toward it's ending without stopping to let anyone off. It's scary and sad and disturbing, with images that stick with you long after you close the book. Effing genius.

I would have loved to get a hold of this book with a red pen!!! Interesting information--repeated at least five times over and over again. And cut the three chapter rant at the end of the book. But I did learn new things about Mesoamerica and Lund is completely right in reiterating that scientific proofs are not going to be what convinces people that the Book of Mormon is a real history of the people of this continent. This is a great book to read, but especially for those who already have a testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

I was finally able to read this book while on vacation. I can't compare this to other books of the genre (like many of the reviews I've read) because I don't usually read these types of books--I read it because I'm a fan of Haas' writing for films such as 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted. All I know is this action/suspense thriller kept me turning the pages, with its present tense POV and straight-for-the-jugular action. It contains many of my favorite things from novels, movies, and TV shows: a dark story about a flawed anti-hero who somehow manages to keep us on his side (even when he's committing acts of atrocity), characters who are true-to-life gray rather than black-and-white, and conflict, conflict, and more conflict. I can't wait to read the sequel.
