I loved this book when I read it, but ˆI made the mistake of seeing the movies and now I cannot get past the really absurd interpretations of the stroy. Sometimes pure art is meant to be left to the imagination.

Excellent historical novel set in the 9th century. I compared popes with a book of popes I have and they matched, same as King of France and other details. Pope Joan was mentioned in the Oxford Dictionary of Popes in an Appendix at the end of the book. I enjoyed it very much.

I'd really rather just watch West Side Story than read this.

I could not put this book down and stayed up past my bedtime to finish this. I sped through the 500-some pages in less than two days but forced myself to slow down at times to make the book last longer. This book was utterfly charming and I fell in love with the characters, their unconventional meeting and courtship, and the story Niffenegger tells of their lives. It was part romance, part mystery, and part science fiction, yet is not any of those at the same time. It's a book that is impossible to place into a neat genre category and perhaps that is for the best. I loved it. This is the first book that I've rated a five out of five in two months. Beautiful and highly recommended.

Rules of Surrender 4 Stars Synopsis: Impoverished and cast out from her family, Lady Charlotte Dalrumple is forced to work as a governess. Ostensibly hired to teach Lady Ruskin’s Eastern born grandchildren in the ways of English society, Charlotte soon realizes that her real assignment is to turn their barbarian father into a true English gentleman. The only problem is that the outspoken and sensual Wynter Ruskin has every intention of turning the tables and seducing the prim and proper Charlotte. Review: Light and entertaining with some laugh out loud moments but the plot is insufficiently developed and the ending feels rushed. The embezzling subplot, for example, has potential but fizzles out, and its conclusion is predictable and contributes little to the story. Dodd is a skilled writer with a talent for characterization. Winter and Charlotte have a vibrant chemistry, and even though there are one or two questionable scenes that may put readers off, for me, they were consistent with the Eastern influence on Wynter’s character. Moreover, Charlotte’s emotional conflict with regard to Wynter and her attraction to him seem to negate the idea that he truly forces himself on her. While, Wynter is obnoxious, chauvinistic and overbearing, Charlotte succeeds in putting him in his place and ultimately teaches him the true value of women and love. The secondary characters are another strong point. From the children, who are sweet and engaging, to Charlotte’s ridiculous bully of an uncle and the bitchy Lady Howard, each plays a part in building the foundations of the story and contribute to the overall atmosphere. On a side note, the story takes place in Victorian times and there are hints at the superior colonial attitudes of the British Empire, which readers may find offensive but should be taken in context. One cannot ignore history and culture even when writing historical romances. In sum, a fun and enjoyable read and I will be continuing with the series.

This book was reviewed for Musings of a bookworm The Blurb Kendra, fifteen, hasn't felt safe since she began to recall devastating memories of childhood sexual abuse, especially because she still can't remember the most important detail-- her abuser's identity. Frightened, Kendra believes someone is always watching and following her, leaving menacing messages only she understands. If she lets her guard down even for a minute, it could cost Kendra her life. To relieve the pressure, Kendra cuts; aside from her brilliantly expressive artwork, it's her only way of coping. Since her own mother is too self-absorbed to hear her cries for help, Kendra finds support in others instead: from her therapist and her art teacher, from Sandy, the close family friend who encourages her artwork, and from Meghan, the classmate who's becoming a friend and maybe more. But the truth about Kendra's abuse is just waiting to explode, with startling unforeseen consequences. Scars is the unforgettable story of one girl's frightening path to the truth. My Thoughts This is a very brave story and I think it is very well done. I love that it was a realistic look into the mind of someone who self harms. It is just honest and at time stomach churning but riveting. I am not sure this book is for everyone but I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes gritty stories.

This my introduction to Henry James and, while the book was mildly enjoyable, I really didn't feel like I was being introduced to a great master of the English language. I just walked away feeling the slightly slimy feeling of the protagonist and without much closure. I can only assume James gets better as he gets more verbose since this slim volume was hardly anything to get excited about unless you wanted some lovely descriptions of Venice in which case it would be quite appropriate. His descriptions are probably the most likeable part of the book since his characters were certainly did not inspire affection.
