Classic trashy summer read. Great brain-candy book for relaxation.

I...couldn't get through this book, and read only about 3/4 of it. I honestly had high hopes for it...it seemed dark, quirky, and importantly different(ish) from what I normally read. Unfortunately, it read like it was geared towards middle-schoolers (i've not read "Twilight" or whatever...but that name/impression lingered in my head as I read "The Sonambulist"). The quirkiness of the characters seemed very forced, and the "steam-punkiness" of the whole thing seemed a bit old...fun in some parts, but hackneyed in others. And to the reviewer who likened it to the work of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez (on the back cover): huh?

This book sucked me in from the very beginning. I couldn't stop reading! I am amazed by the bravery and tenacity of the main character, Mary Ingles. This is a story that will always stay with me, especially because it is based on a true story.

This sixth Maisie Dobbs novel explores even more deeply than the previous ones the psychological effects of war on survivors, both combatants and civilians. Beginning on Christmas Eve, 1931, the plot unfolds with Winspear's usual attention to period detail but at the same time provokes thought about our world of 2010-11: a suicide bomber in London, a terrorist threatening chemical attacks, turf wars between the police and military intelligence interfering with discovery and capture of the attacker. In Winspear's 1930s London, Maisie is in the middle of all the conflicts, urging and practicing compassion toward damaged World War I veterans and a variety of suffering women including her employee's wife, her best friend, and a young chemist arrested for union activity. She has better success with the women than with the men, and seems quite far ahead of her time in her ideas about treatment of mental disorders. Frighteningly competent, our Maisie.

"Room" was a very good book. It was very interesting to read it from the point of view of the five-year old little boy, Jack. It reveals triumph over great adversity, but yet it is heart-wrenching to think of what the mom had to go through and how much of the "real" world Jack really doesn't understand - things we take for granted.

While the characters were interesting/messed up, I object to a mystery that is never solved.

Another one my fifth grade teacher read to us during snack time and I continue the tradition.

** spoiler alert ** I had high hopes for this book and I thought about even buying it, thank goodness I didn't. I felt like it got bogged down in the middle and could have used some editing. I felt myself skimming, skimming, skimming and I love thick books rich with description. And of course, a cliffhanger at the end of a novel means a sequel is in the works.

This was an interesting book. It is very sad how women around the world are subjugated and struggle to survive.

While I agree with Dylan's poignant insights on this enlightening tale of anticipation, struggle, and eventual deliverance, I felt it could provide most any avid reader with a joyful Sunday toilet read. (Not just those with the predisposition of having emancipated themselves while immersed in Confessions of an Heiress). In all honesty, I felt this fascinating narrative through its meandering broken English canine antics was far more conducive than the overexposed, strained, nut-filled transcendence of Heiress.
