I don't know, I like it a lot, but I wasn't entranced by it. In fact, I had to put it down several times instead of reading it straight through. The stylistic aspects were great, but I got tired reading about so many self-absorbed people, which was, indeed, the point, but still.

I'm currently picking through this collection of short stories that these young writers wrote in the thirty days after they were placed on the Granta Young American Novelists list. I went to a reading recently where Akhil Sharma (one of the chosen) basically said that only three of the writers in these pages are worthy of the title. I've only read two of the stories -- Karen Russell's and Rattawut Lapcharoensap's -- both of which I loved (full disclosure: I was in the same program as Russell so I might be biased).

Fascinating book...It's kinda like Greil Marcus' "Lipstick Traces..." but with an all-star cast of European and American Intellegentsia, artists, and musicians. Mr. James gives a brief bio of a person (from A-Z, actually) then uses that person's information and anecdotes to go on a couple page digression. It's fascinating.

I just wish I could say the same about the ending; it was rather disappointing and made me think for sure there must've been some pages missing but apparently no, this really is how it ends. Though, I guess I could simply imagine what happens next :)

roseanna is a melancholy novel: i felt sad for the victim, and sad for the detectives (especially martin beck - the titular detective of the series) investigating her death. as they sought to discover the mystery behind her death and found out more about her, i felt worse and worse. i think the novel tries to underscore the fact that people are complex, that they act and react as the result of their experience and predispositions. roseanna reminds us that pain comes to all, and it isn't really about just desserts. i'd give this here a 3.5
