I became obsessed with The Who in seventh grade. I was introduced to this book then, but I don't think I read it until I owned my copy which was a couple of years later. Its a great book for lovers of the musical. It has all the words, stage directions, great photographs, and other extras like the original casts thoughts and a background on the Who. The one I got came with a single of Pete Townsend singing "I Believe My Own Eyes," which was new for the musical.

Another book I got from Mieville's "50 s/f Books for Socialists". At first I thought "We" was going to be just another rant against totalitarianism (1984, Brave New World, Anthem), which, althought I agree with, can get a bit old. However, "We" is really the story of one man's personal awakening, as is involved much more with emotions and dreams than just the nightmarish "utopia" in which he lives. The writing is also very poetic, very expressive and artful, which at times makes it a better reading experience than Huxley or Rand, whose prose is very much a vehicle for their ideas, and at times more frustrating; much of the book is very abstract, at times almost surreal. The book is so much about character and writing that the world itself is left vague - I could never picture any of the scenes in my mind, as the city, buildings and vehicles were all left floating. I never quite understood, and therefor never quite believed, the government or society in "We". Perhaps this was on account of the first person narrative, as D-503 knows his city and doesn't feel a need to explain it, but merely as personal taste, I like a bit more concreteness in a novel, especially sci-fi. Still, this book was very interesting from a historical perspective, as the ending prefigured not only 1984 but Clock Work Orange.

A dirty little secret - I never liked Tennyson as much as I pretended I did, even back when I was a long-locked undergrad reading poetry by moonlight in the gardens at Bard. I always WANTED to like Tennyson, as he's the hight of Victorian midieval obsessions, but its all too . . . formal. Give me the real middle ages any day.

Ironically, I didn't intend to buy this book. I checked it out at work and then spilled my drink on it, so had to purchase it! The premise is a couple agrees to only buy necessesities for a year and the excerpts I read about them debating whether q-tips and wine were essentials amused me. But she alternates those anecdotes with stories of economic policies that I didn't care about. And I couldn't relate to their choices since they already get food from co-ops and were so politically minded...which let's face it, I'm not. I didn't connect and I didn't find it memorable.
