The year is 1845, the place Sonoma Valley in Alta California. Raised as a Catholic at a Spanish mission in Northern California along with her younger brother before the two of them were taken in to be the servants of a wealthy Mexican family on their ranch, thirteen year old Maria Rosalia de Milagros barely remembers her Indian mother, who died of smallpox when she was six. She doesn't even know who her father was, only that he was a white man, or even what her real name was - Maria Rosalia was the name given to her by Padre Ygnacio, the priest who saved the lives of her and her little brother. Even though she is well treated by the family she works for, the Medinas, Maria Rosalia longs to know who her parents were. Her only hope would be to find Padre Yganico, and she doesn't have any idea where he is after all these years. Still, Maria Rosalia is able to find joy in holidays and celebrations, in writing in her diary, and in a new American friend, but there is a great deal of sorrow as well. This was an excellent addition to the Dear America series (and one of my favorite books in the series) that revealed a great deal about a way of life that has vanished into the depths of time, and taught me about a period in American history that I knew little about.

Loved it! If you're not ready to hear the message or open your mind & heart to new realities (clinging to past ideologies), it may not be for you. If you are interested in the wild truth within, you'll love it.

Having read China Mieville's excellent and sadly under-the-radar New Crobuzon trilogy (Perdido Street Station, The Scar, Iron Council) I was rather leery of reading Un Lun Dun, his first work of young adult fiction. However, Mieville brings the same bizarre perspective and riotous imagination to his YA fiction as he does to his other writing. The story's main characters, Zanna and Deeba, find themselves sucked into UnLondon, London's warped mirror-city. A war between the UnLondoners and the Smog, sentient pollution bent on incinerating and consuming the city and its inhabitants, will have dire consequences for London as well. Saving UnLondon falls to Deeba, who must also make it back home before she gradually fades from the memory of her family. Unlike Mieville's adult fiction, Un Lun Dun has a happy and rather predictable ending, but the characters that populate its pages are original and engaging, and Mieville's clever illustrations make the book a visual delight as well.

"Galapagos" is, as far as I can tell, when Kurt Vonnegut decided to become "Kurt Vonnegut." This book feels like an imperfect parody of Vonnegut's style. It's not _bad_, per se, it's just not very good. Narrated from 1 million years in the future, by Kilgore Trout's son, this book has flashes of real resonance, like when Leon Trout speaks of his time in Vietnam. All in all, however, the entire thing feels misanthropic in a way that definitely would have appealed to me back in junior high, but feels rather fake and forced 15 years later. Stick to "Cat's Cradle" and "Slaughterhouse-5", I'd say.

i laughed out-loud throughout. it's the antidote to acclaimed and terrible contemporary writers.

Found the story tedious to work through and never fully engaging. The danger of the situation although explained on the page never seemed to elicit and actually emotion from me. I did not find the characters over relating to real people, special powers or not. I'm unsure if I will read any other books belonging to this series, although curiosity does always lead me to wanting to know what's next and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm enjoying it or not. If you are a HP fan I feel you will be disappointed with it's relationship to the mentioned character of Flamel and it doesn't really feel like a good fit in the alternate explanations and new creative ways of mythology.

I bought this because my nephew has shown an inclination towards graphic novels. But then I happened to be waiting for a plane to arrive so I started to read. What unfolded was an unusual but true story of an unhappy childhood, vividly depicted in the imaginative drawings and spartan words of the man who survived it. Think of it as David Sedaris with drawing taking the place of the dry, biting wit - it's the means to escape from the pain of childhood that becomes the genius of the adult. You marvel at how something so admirable can come from such suffering - like a tree twisted tree that clings to a cliff it's tortured - and beautiful. I know that at this point in history it's patronizing to talk about graphic novels as if they needed special validation to be worthy of serious attention - they are at least as worthy of attention as any other form of novel. But graphic non-fiction is still a bit cutting edge and I feel the need to add my vote - it's wonderful. A compelling autobiography that can be read in one sitting. Intense, complex, nuanced and beautiful. It's proof of the power of this genre. I put it down and felt that I had been on the journey of his life with him, and I wanted to read more non-fiction like this. If any old picture is worth a thousand words, some of Small's are worth ten times that.

Charlie has such a cool power - the power to understand all languages. I have to wonder if Derting was inspired by The Skeleton Key ... in any case, very atmospheric, creepy and cool.
