So much better than the movie. Its very nuanced and the characters are so much more well-rounded.

This book contains a huge number of letters that a paratrooper wrote to his family while serving in WWII. The letters give you a glimpse into the training and some of the daily thoughts a trooper experienced. The author adds notes to augment his letters home to clarify what he could not, at the time, include due to censorship by the army. My motivation for reading this book was because Mr. Whidden was with my great uncle George Lineberry when he was killed and I wanted to learn more about those circumstances and possibly learn more about my great uncle. These troopers clearly saw some very tough action by fighting at Normandy and Holland in the 101st Airborne. This was a easy read that doesn't have foul language or blood and guts details yet clearly shows the reader the hardships.

One of my least favorite NR books. Plot seemed underdeveloped and the heroine wasn't willing to compromise on anything.

The Ruins of Gorlan focuses mainly on a boy named Will and takes place sometime in the medieval time period. Will is an orphan whose dad died in battle and mom died giving birth to him. Will is a somewhat passive person. He is determined and as the story progresses, his personality changes. He was given to a baron who accepted Will as a ward of his castle. This gave Will a place to live, eat, sleep and get an education. Will was a ward along with 4 of his friends, Horace, Jenny, Alyss, and George. The story focuses on all these characters, but it mostly focuses on Will. These 5 friends split up to go to different schools. As the story progresses the reader gets different perspectives of all the characters. The story is mostly from Will's perspective and his training as a ranger, but it transitions through all the characters. Will learns from his master, Halt. Halt is a strong, strict person. Yet he cares about Will even though he doesn't usually show it. He teaches Will to fight and use weapons, but most important to a ranger, to be stealthy and blend in. There is conflict for every character in the book, but the main conflict is will training to become a ranger. As will starts his training he has a lot of difficulty. He is unfamiliar with the intensity of the training and feels like giving up quite a bit throughout the story. Will refuses to give up though, and although the training doesn't get easier he eventually gets used to it. This book is very good and is not a difficult read. It does a good job of keeping the reader entwined in the book and what's happening. This book is definitely good for teenagers because it has action and is focused more around kids than adults.

It was just a story of despair. This sentence sums up the whole book. Dysfunctional, depressing, wandering, icky - those are my words to sum it up. I think the author has great potential - the writing was lovely in places, he has a prose-like style which I would not mind seeing again. However, the subject matter and the perversity of it all was just not to my taste. I have had this book on my list to read since it was first released and this was just not at all what I had expected. Oh well, to each his own...

3.5 stars. A good book about the famous HeLa cell line that has contributed so much to science, interlaced with the story of the original donor, Henrietta Lacks, and her family. Skloot objectively discusses the legal and ethical issues involved when research is carried out on tissue samples taken from human subjects. Do you own every piece of your body? Should you be informed whenever a bit of it, however small, is taken away and experimented upon? Are you entitled to compensation if a corporation profits from research done on your genetic material? You might not be surprised at the answers to these questions for a poor, uneducated black patient in 1951 - Henrietta was not asked, was not informed, was not compensated. It's interesting to consider that the answers are still uncertain for a modern patient. The science in the book is lightweight. I wish the author had written more about HeLa and a little less about her personal relationship with Henrietta's daughter.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were lovable and the ending satisfactory, and the history poignant without being gut wrenching (I'd say it's a gentle introduction to Nazi Germany.) In my opinion, the strongest part of the book is actually a small book written by one character for another. The point of that hand-written story was that words have power, and words were heavily responsible for Hitler's power over the German people. It's an incredibly strong message that young people should take note of. Words have power. This book will stay on my shelves awaiting my children are a bit older so they can enjoy this book too.
