May 12, 2012 Even better the second time around, regardless of the fact that I already knew what would happen. I like to wolf pack more and more, and I really enjoyed the chapters narrated by Jacob. The vampires and interesting and likeable, but the werewolves are exponentially more so for me. Glad I reread it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 22, 2011 Silly me, thinking that this was a trilogy and reading this book only to find out that there is one left in the series that I skipped! My bad. Anywhoo... this was a pleasant read. I like how Meyer went from Bella's narration to Jacob's. He cracks me up. Meyer did a very good job with his voice. He really sounds like a teenage boy, and a very likeable teenage boy at that. Even the chapter titles, such as "Sure As Hell Didn't See That One Coming," and "Too-Much-Information Alert" brought a smile to my face in his section of the book, whereas the titles that are narrated by Bella feel more like informative titles that the author chose. *spoiler alert* The plot itself is very good. How can it not be when there is a human-vampire wedding, which actually results in conception during the honeymoon and then a werewolf imprints on the child, who is so adorable that, yes, even the werewolf falls for her charm AND swears to protect her even if it means dying for her. Naturally, her life is threatened, and there is a lovely climax with loads of stuff going on as the vampires' world holds a few more surprises, which thankfully guarantees that this book, being the fourth in the series, is NOT repetitive. Even with the same old vilains, the Volturi, showing their ugly parched faces again. AND, of course, I love the plot because there is a happy ending. This book wouldn't really fit into my escapism streak if it were any different. ;)

“The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal” is a story about self discovery and finding one’s place in the world. The story is narrated by the title character and examines the life of an African-American male in his early to mid-twenties trying to figure out the basics of being an adult. Written as a character study, the author N.S. Ugezene has created a story unique amongst other urban tales. The premises of the story is that Shaun Pascal, also known as KP, is a twenty-something young African-American man that is in and out of school as well as work, has recently moved back in with his mother and step-father, and is desperately looking for acceptance and love. He has a dream of becoming a rapper, but can not focus on that goal because he allows his mind to wonder on every possible detail of life. The majority of the book is spent with Pascal questioning the motives of females and friends, as well as describing every day activities around his neighborhood in the city of Pomona, California, in which he resides. Written in first person style, we are given an intimate look into the mindset of the lead character. He is depressed about his current state of living, and is constantly looking for something to make his life better. That arrives in the female character of Nadalina McGastry whose entrance into the story gives Pascal some hope about his future. The story is about love and accepting that emotion. “The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal” is not without its faults. It is almost as if its originality is what makes it a difficult read. The story is told in a stream-of-consciousness manner, with characters and subject matter discussed and discarded in what seems to have no point to the forward movement of the story. This concept can work if there is intention behind it; but without a purpose, much of what you learn in the story leads to no where. The thoughts of Pascal can be described like separate essays, where he begins with a thesis, defines issues, and many times gives solutions; but without any real pay off for the story. Where this novel does succeed is in capturing the thoughts of person with his age, gender, and economic situation. It was refreshing to read about an African-American male who is complex, intelligent, and confused. Shaun Pascal will remind you of someone you know; a person who is creative and smart, but unsure of what direction to go in. The story does not try and judge Pascal or those around him. What it does do is give an open window into their lives. Ugezene’s novel is a good attempt in taking urban fiction in a new direction. Structurally though, the novel does need some help; therefore, I will give the book 3 ½ stars out of 5. It is something readers can enjoy, but they will need to take their time reading to really grasp it. Reviewed By: Jason Luntz

I had a love-hate relationship with this book. Actually, love is too strong a word. And hate is too strong as well. The things I liked about it were the same things that annoyed me about it, but I suppose it depended on my mood. One thing I liked was that it gave tremendous detail to the intricate lives of Betsy and her family and friends. The author successfully created the environment for us and made it possible to visualize a time that we didn't experience first hand. At times I became annoyed at this because it could get very long--even down to the details of the advertisements in the newspaper for the different shops in town. We would read through one shops advertisement, which included a list of goods, then read another, and another, and another. It sort of went like this, "Items available are, brown velvet, blue velvet, black velvet, red velvet, purple velvet, ocher velvet, green velvet, brown silk, blue silk, purple silk, red silk, green silk, black silk, red damask, gold damask, brocades, canvases, muslin....and on and on.....burgundy tassels, gold tassels....and on and on....tacks, pins, needles....and on and on. It got a little monotonous, but I was confident that the information in this book was accurate. The truth is, this is a HUGE BOOK about a person we know very little about. I did come away with an appreciation for Betsy Ross and the experiences she had. Not a must read, but it is interesting if you are interested in understanding the environment during the American revolution. I recommend listening to it on a road trip or something.
