I've decided my two-star rating was too severe. It was just boring, not awful.

AMAZING book! As always, Jane Austen proves to be one of the best authors ever.

I found myself trying to finish whatever I was doing just so I could get back to my book. The narration is amazing and, although I get bored through a lot of narrative, this book was never boring. I fell in love with most of the people, even the "mean" ones I, at times, couldn't help but feel sympathy for them for they did not know any better. I would recommend this book over and over again

The book is very scattered, as it tries to cover a lot of things that happened in 1977. I thought the parts about baseball and politics were really good, the ones about the blackout and Son of Sam were fair, and I think there was one other major story line, but it couldn't have been too memorable, since I can't remember it.

This is an okay book. I am humbled by the life of Maj Dick Winters but I have to tell you, I didn't need to know all the nitnoid things surrounding his youth, his parents' youth and the surroundings of Lancaster, Penn. I am having problems getting through the initial introduction of Winter's youth and into what I am really interested in: World War II experiences.

One of the most fascinating things about this book is how it came to be. Liao Yiwu is constantly on the run from the Chinese government, has been jailed, tortured, and forced to be a wandering street musician. The text for this book was smuggled out of China and published for the rest of the world to read, and wow, what a read! Yiwu interviews the members of the lowest rungs in Chinese society like the public toilet manager, a leper, a grave robber, a father who lost his son in the Tiananmen massacre, a blind erhu player, a human trafficker, a migrant worker, and many others. Most of them give graphic, detailed accounts of what life was like for during the famines and political turmoil of the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward. I do wish that there were more interviews about current times now that China has opened up its economy a lot more as this would have provided a powerful compare/contrast situation. One of the funniest chapters was the interview titled 'The Peasant Emperor'. In 1989 Zeng Yinglong declared himself emperor of his village and was later thrown in jail for it. The interview goes something like this: Yiwu: Are you the well known emperor that people talk about in this jail? Yinglong: You should address me as 'Your Majesty." and then hilarity ensues. One of the most memorable interviews was from a retired Communist Party official who discussed the difficulty of the 1960s famine and how his attempts at curbing cannibalism in his region were a failure. Apparently little girls were targeted since they are seen as disposable and some families would swap children in order to not eat their own. He raised some interesting moral questions about what one would do in a similar situation. Do you eat one child to save the rest or let them all starve to death? Overall a really interesting and worthwhile read.

I just loved this book for its hopefulness, its true definition of the purpose of humanity, its unusual subject and the joy of it even in the darker parts. Its very unusual, and its not something that I'd turn to for hard core lit, but its a lovely read nonetheless and I truly enjoyed it.

Read this one on a friend's suggestion and really enjoyed it! I'm not much of a sci fi girl, but this was pretty low-key. I thought the author did an amazing job of conveying the intensity of the darkness. I watched the movie after reading the book and as I suspected there was just no way they could ever convey how oppressive the darkness was. It was written so well that I got panicky a few times when they experience blackouts and such. Anyway, great read. I'm anxious to start the next book in the series! And I'm encouraging my 11 year old to read it. I think he'll really love it!

A good easy inexpensive summer read. Characters well drawn, good expression of small town life. Had no idea there was marble mined in Vermont! Twists in the story kept it interesting.
