I think this book typifies female sexuality in a woman's twenties--looking for love and acceptance through sex. Discovering that sex is multi-faceted, sometimes boring, exhausting, disappointing, dirty, casual, intense, life-changing, intimate, amazing. Even though she dreams about the zipless fuck, she discovers that it's not about the reality of sex or who it's with--it's about her. She needs to learn to please herself and take risks for her own personal development. I think that is a huge struggle we all have--stay the course or make a change.

This book is one of my favorites in this series. It had the right amount of mystery and action. I am really glad I started reading this series and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Loved this book! It was well written and I loved the twists and turns in the story. The main character did act like an idiot from time to time, but I suppose it's forgivable.

I read 125 pages and was bored for probably 120 of those pages. It sounded like it would be good, and maybe it gets better, but if it hasn't hooked me after 125 pages, I really don't feel the need to keep reading. Oh well, on to the next one.

I'm not the first reader and certainly won't be the last to swoon over Four, to cheer at Tris's growth, and to hit the middle of the book and be unable to put it down. Roth has an engaging style that makes it easy to slip into a future world where society is divided by factions based on traits and populated by unique characters. Guaranteed you'll read this book and try and mentally fit yourself, your friends, and family into one of the factions. Then, like Tris, begin to question if it's even possible. Of course, you have to read to learn the answer.

Cause I thought this was some preachy dragging blah.

The story feels like a living thing, the writing speaks and sings and flows like tributaries flowing into streams and then into confluence with the larger story of the town. This book is a keeper.

I think this is a very important and influential book. It is about immigrants from Central America and Mexico who go through a long and extremely dangerous journey to pass illegally into the States. It focuses on children who are left behind by one or more parents who leave in a desperate attempt to make money so their children can have enough to eat. They face numerous consequences from doing so, including the anger and resentment from the children they've left. What an unimaginable decision to be faced with. So sad. The author details the trip of a teenager named Enrique, who leaves for America to find his mother who left him 10 years before. This is a real eye-opener. Thanks, Heidi, for the recommendation!

typically assoicated with black mountain/post modern poets...but i've always thought Duncan to be steeped in the Romantic tradition. *shrugs*

Oh my, what to say about this book. What Dan Brown lacks in character development, good writing skills, modesty, proper research, and not being a bit racist, he tries to make up for with insane plot twists. There were more plot twists shoved in the last ~40 pages of this book than I imagine are in most murder mysteries. I have to give him some kudos for his imagination - the ideas in the book are exciting in a guilty, trashy sort of way. However, all of his characters fall entirely flat. They are poorly written and undefined. Brown does whatever he wants with them whether or not the action befits the character he's created thus far, until you're left not really imagining a character and more a vehicle by which Brown tries to make his book crazier and crazier. All of the character description and dialogue is so contrived and cliche, it's maddening. I rolled my eyes every time the lead female character did anything in the story, because every time she did, it was accompanied by some new description of her lithe, Mediterranean body. Give me a damn break. I won't even get into the depictions of the two non-white people in the book (one a sassy, heavy-set, black, female camerawoman and the other a horrifying, vengeful, Arab, Muslim murderer/rapist). You get the picture. What Brown claims to be factual in the book (mostly bits concerning theology, Catholicism, and the Illuminati, with some advanced physics sprinkled in) are so offbase, it's laughable. And his obvious perspectives on science, religion, and faith that shine through in the novel are concerning at best. That said, great to read if you want a good laugh or something that is otherwise mindless. Kept me occupied on the train to and from work for a couple weeks.
