I really hate to give less than three stars but sometimes, I really have no choice. This is daaammmnnn booorrriing. I can't understand why so many liked this story. For me, it was bleh. Anyway, I'm only into half of the book so maybe, I'll change my rating after I finish it. I keep expecting the book to get better, but its still the same so far. I don't really buy the whole feeding-bad-angel thing. If those are angels, then, where is God? Why isn't he doing anything? The guy started out as an eleven year old angel killer? really?? That's so far fetched. Another issue is that angels can be killed by bullets through their haloes?Really?????? Willow is a half angel? Apparently, angels have sperms?geez. Anyway, I'll read the rest of the books to find out what happened. Maybe I'll change my mind if it gets better. Maybe, the two stars will turn into a four. Maybe. I originally gave this 2 stars when I was half-way through the book. I'm upgrading this to three stars. It's better than most YA books and worse than others. Just an okay book, I guess.

JEEZ I thought I liked this book a lot - but I couldn't remember exactly why or how I'd describe it for a review... So then I read some other reviews and found out I apparently was totally taken in or too dumb to know it was trash or too undiscriminating to discern bogus and belabored and lord knows whatever other literary sins that some poor slob named Dave Eggers committed! Admittedly I just don't keep up with the times enough to recognize that this somebody named Dave Eggers is either REALLY a loser that anyone with sense will hate OR a damned genius that only the True Elite will recognize. Now I'm not about to give myself away any further than I already have, so I'm just going to clam up right now and not even say another damned word about Dave Eggers or his weird and heartbreaking book! But I admittedly DO resonate with back cover blurbs from such as NY Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post: "evokes the terrible beauty of young, like a young Bob Dylan, frothing with furious anger"... or "funny, wildly intelligent" or "exhilarating... profoundly moving... often hilarious." Then maybe calling it a "finite book of jest" helps me slip into a more personal pronouncement with a bit more security. Bottom line: I liked this book and am glad I read it!

Bob the Alien is confused by the Dewey Decimal System. Who isn't??? It's not all facts, it's not all true and it's very arbitrary to say the least. Why do we still use it? Because re-classifying everything would be a giant pain, and no one has really come up with a better system. In this picture book, the librarian explains to Bob what books are in each section, and how to read a call number. Boring topic, but cute pictures. When in doubt, ask your librarian for help, good advice! May be good for school tours with elementary?

I liked this book, about 3/4 of the way through, in fact almost until the end I would have rated this book higher, but the ending ... while succeeding in being a surprise, was surprisingly disappointing. If this was the first book I'd read of his, I'd probably not look forward to reading another of his books. It was good, just disappointingly less than I would expect from reading Midwives and The Buffalo Soldier.

And right back to the kids books. But not just for kids, I swear. This is the true story of alice in wonderland--not that fluff that lewis carroll wrote---getting it all wrong. When I started out reading this I was pretty skeptical through the first chapter--thought it was going to be super cheesy--but by the end of chapter 2 I was hooked. This has an intense pace, awesome characters (the mad hatter is really hatter madigan a bodyguard with a deadly throwing hat--ala oddjob from james bond), and some really great action/fight scenes. have an advance copy of the second one and am fighting with myself to wait until vacation to read it.
