This is a riveting book. The reader is constantly revising the outcome. The story centers on orphans, and the beginning of the book shows 2 orphan brothers. As the story progresses, the reader discovers more orphans in this story of brutality, hate, greed, and fear. One wonders if goodness stands a chance in this dismal tale. But the reader must think of the ugly and painful cactus that produces a beautiful flower when all hope seems lost. John Hart has told a painful and unforgettable story, as I try to think if this is as good as The Last Child. Iron House is worth reading in spite of the violence.

Great book! Great writing! My sister and I were just recently throwing the idea around to continue the Peter Pan story with Peter and Wendy grown up. And then this story appeared and made that story happen in such a great way! I just can't believe I have to wait until December 2012 to read the next one. That's just cruel.

This is a great book. It lays out our history in all its truth - the bad, the slightly better and the ugly. I wish I'd had this in high school. I've been trying to beef up my knowledge of American History of late and this is perfect. I'm reading it in conjunction with Voices From A People's History - they are companions made in heaven. It gives a very textured view of our past.

wow, this book brings back memories of 5th grade :) it's a cool story, but a bit slow and slightly depressing. well written, but i don't think i would recommend it highly.

This is the best book on Oregon history that I have found. Rick Steber is a local author who has grown up here. I have read a lot of old/new books on Oregon. The old and new places are referred to in conjunction so it makes sense. The history is cut into sections; ie trappers/missionaries/settlers/ so that even if the chronology crosses, it is less confusing to understand how Oregon developed. And who made an impact on what. I have to add that this book took the LONGEST to read, since i can't remember WHEN i have spent that long on a book! BUT everything was so RELEVENT. Like, my husand has cards he sells of a basin that is an incredible historic area because the early settlers and expeditioners had to go through it and many died or almost did! I have a notebook, 10 pages shy, that I took from this book! My husband says I wrote a new book lol.
