This was a relatively easy read and was a very good book that gives a good snapshot of Stonewall Jackson's staff family, from one of the younger staff members. I found the interactions among the various staff members very interesting, and it made me wish I worked on a staff that small. His view of John Brown was especially interesting. MAJ Douglas gives a young staff officer's perspective of many of the most famous events and battles of Stonewall Jackson's career, through his death at Chancellorsville, including lots of personal details that humanize Jackson. My only quibble is the tone of the end notes, which at times bordered on snarky, the fault of the editor.

This is a quick read, but is written in a very different format. You can actually hear the 3 women's characters speak throughout the time periods it exploits. Its emotional, and most women can definately relate to some aspect of the story.

What can I say? I like Mike Wallace. He's what a journalist should be- direct, no frills, no bs, to the point. This was like reading a diary and getting dirt on a bunch of famous and important people

Emma Carter has always held a torch for Max Cannon, who she secretly crushed on in high school. Ten years later she co-owns a curio shop with her best friend and Max has returned, always one to fade into the woodwork Emma has no problem just listening to the town gossips about what he is up to, rather than pursue her feelings. Alpha Max is glad to be home, and now is looking for his mate. When he overhears Emma's lusty voice on the phone with his beta, he is curious to see her again. It takes only a moment to realize he has wasted 10 years looking, she has been in front of him the whole time. Now all Max has to do is convince Emma that he is a puma shifter and she is his mate. Thought this was a ton of fun, had some humourous areas in the book and has a definite sequel. Reread, kept thinking about this one and forgot how short it is. Still a fun read though.

Jackie, "Jack" Daniels is a former Chicago detective. Now a private investigator, she's abducted from her home and his bound and about to be tortured by the famous killer, "Mr. K." The story is segmented into three parts. In the first part, it tells about Jackie going undercover twenty-one years ago in order to catch a serial killer who was dismembering and murdering women. The second segment deals with three years ago when Jackie and her partner are following John Dalton when a body was found and a car matching Dalton's was seen leaving the scene. The last segment is current time while she is about to be tortured and murdered. Having a story move through three time periods is difficult. I found that it made the story less suspenseful and some of the momentum was lost. Some of the segments were only one page long and jumping from time periods like this cased a bit of confusion. In addition there is lots of torture and sadistic people in this story. The reader must suspend their sense of logic for some of the action such as where Jackie, who wears size six so is about one hundred pounds, finds herself naked in the abductor's home and overpowering her captor, who is over two hundred pounds, seemed unlikely. I also found the ending unrealistic and unsatisfactory. Deus ex machina is defined as a plot technique where a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly solved with a contrived and unexpected intervention of some new character. The use of this, even if in variation, is never acceptable. I have enjoyed Konrath in the past but this novel disappointed.

A persuasive argument in favour of unstructured outdoor experience. Louv mostly avoids criticizing info-tech, but occasionally tips his hand: "Instructors in medical schools find it increasingly difficult to teach how the heart works as a pump... 'because these students have so little real-world experience; they've never siphoned anything... may not even have hooked up a garden hose.' " (p. 66) Interestingly, his stance sometimes puts him at odds even with conservationists, who may not look kindly on children nailing up boards for treehouses. Also notable: "In 2001, the Alliance for Childhood... released 'Fool's Gold: A Critical Look at Computers in Childhood'... thirty years of research on educational technology had produced just one clear ink between computers and children's learning." (p. 136) "Like a sugared drink on a hot day, [electronic] entertainment leaves kids thirsting for more -- for faster, bigger, more violent stimuli. This insidious, new kind of boredom is one reason for the rising number of psychiatric problems among children and adolescents, according to an article in Newsweek..." (p. 167) "Orr argues that the ecological crisis is rooted in the way we educate future generations. The dominant form of education today 'alienates us from life in the name of human domination, fragments instead of unifies, overemphasizes success and careers, separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical, and unleashes on the world minds ignorant of their ignorance.' In other words, today's practices help create the know-it-all state of mind, and the accompanying loss of wonder. Orr calls for a new approach to education to promote 'ecological design intelligence' that could, in turn, create 'healthy, durable, resilient, just, and prosperous communities.' ... Orr proposes that colleges set a goal of ecological literacy for all students, so that no student would graduate without a basic comprehension of: - the laws of thermodynamics - the basic principles of ecology - carrying capacity - energetics - least-cost, end-use analysis - how to live well in a place - limits of technology - appropriate scale - sustainable agriculture and forestry - steady-state economics - environmental ethics" (p. 221)

This is the fifth book in the Harry Potter series and where everything really starts to happen. Harry and his friends are starting to grow up - a part that we all love - and Harry's fight with Voldemort is becoming more real. If you are reading Harry for the first time I'm sure you don't need a recommendation o keep reading this one.

If you like Gone with the Wind then you will like this book. Some of the characters take there parts alittle to far. I enjoyed the book very much and will read other books by this author.

This is a very compelling read! I wouldn't suggest it to just anyone because of the cursing and the references to murder, rape, drug use, etc. but wow, what an interesting and readable peek into a culture and job that are completely foreign to me! If you liked the movie "Donnie Brasco," I bet you would also like this book.
