I loved this book. It's about a girl named Jenna Fox, who we know at the start of the book has been in a coma for about a year and has just come out of it. However, she can remember the most minute historical facts but not what happened before the day she woke up. She can't even feel any love for her mother and her grandmother. She's confined to the house, can't eat anything, and has to take doses of 'nutrients.' Eventually, her memories start coming back, and a horrible bio-medical secret is revealed. Through the course of the book, you realize that you're witnessing a future where the overuse of antibiotics has made us vulnerable to the slightest disease, and an epidemic of a virus has wiped out 1/4 of the planet. The beginning of the book is incredibly slow, but the pace picked up and then I couldn't put it down. Not only are you rooting for Jenna to figure it out, but the discussion of medical ethics and how far someone should go to save someone they love is very thought-provoking. Although the ethics can make some kids and parents squeamish, I would recommend this to any kid who likes to ponder these things from grade 8 up.

This was a really great book--very well written with likable and realistic characters. While not exactly a sequel it does continue on with the story line of her first novel, "Love Walked In."--another great and enjoyable read.

This tome is about water. Specifically it's about squandered resources, inept politicians, and the ascendancy of the Western United States from the obscurity of its naturally arid environment. Perhaps it's a tad ironic that it's somewhat dry reading, but its implications are truly astounding. Much of the first half is a truly crushing and well-documented account of Los Angeles' rise into the sprawling metropolitan region it is today at the expense of one of the most precious fertile valleys America had ever seen.

These books are incredible and held me spellbound for two weeks. I could not put them down and thank god my boss was in Florida and I could read them openly at work. This beginning one is good, but it really goes places you just do not see it going. I look back at the beginning and my simplistic understanding of this very complex world and I laugh. Just like looking back at my own life.

I bought and read this book because I grew up four blocks from the Rather family home in the Heights section of Houston and was a classmate of his younger brother, Don. I certainly didn't do it because I have anything in common with Dan. It is an autobiography of his early years. I enjoyed it because I was familiar with the area and knew some of the people.
