I found the incredibly underdeveloped character of Dora to be quite a distraction in this book. Davy, her mischievous twin was delightful in his badness, but she was a blank slate. Other than that, Anne's navigation through early adulthood (although that started sooner then as she is 17-18 in this book) was enjoyable. Some of the "teacher" chapters were particularly amusing.

What was the point of writing this? Just to get donations for the children's charity? Should have been a much larger book, or it should have been added to a new box set with all the books.
I don't remember the last time I enjoyed a book so much. 1/3 through I had to post a note here about how I was reading it and crying because I was laughing so hard. You know that feeling when you're reading or watching or listening to something and you already know, before completion, that it's going to be one of your favorite things ever? Yeah, that. The best thing about traveling is the people you meet and Gilbert paints a colorful portrait of the people she encounters through Italy, India, and Indonesia (be it the big Texan at her ashram in India or the medicine man in Bali who signs off with "see you later alligator!"). Since not all of us have the luxury of taking a year off to eat, pray, and find balance in life, we can be thankful that she does it for us, writing a detailed account of her year 'finding herself'. The fun thing is that this is the one time you'll read about someone trying to do that and you won't roll your eyes. It's a genuine, moving, inspiring book. She's incredibly human and very, very funny. I enjoyed every drop.

Fascinating history intersecting disease, mosquitos, geography, botany, science, politics, and personalities. Who knew, for instance, that Union attempts to establish a bridgehead along the Atlantic coast were stopped largely because of outbreaks of marlaria, typhoid, and yellow fever? Or that Napoleon used his knowlege of malaria, or "Walcheren" to defeat the English: "We must oppose the English with nothing but fever, which will soon devour them all." Later, Napoleon would himself cause the worst epidemic of malaria ever seen in Europe, breaching the dykes to flood the Scheldt estuary, thereby creating a perfect mosquito breeding ground.

I was glued to this book! I wanted to know what was going to happen next? I really enjoyed the twisted sense of humor and found myself laughing a lot. I learned that sometimes when we are desperately seeking answers we lose sight of what might really be important. Our desperation seems driven by fear, guilt, shame, and sometimes anger of what we don't yet understand.

On the level of a sentence or paragraph, Zadie Smith is a wonderful author. But the characters and story are not particularly interesting or likeable. I had the same problem with the last book of hers I tried - The Autograph Man, I think.

This book is absolutely massive, and despite being five chapters in, I'm still in the introductory phases. However, the family already seems quite convoluted, and while I suspect it will take me a little bit to get into this book, I'll forge ahead. It's almost 800 pages long and I've barely made a dent.
