Okay, I admit I "read" this one in audio form on my morning jogs. I picked up this book after I read Buchan's THE 39 STEPS last year (a fun, quick, adventure read). I liked Richard Hannay and thought I'd dive in for more. I can't say this was quite on par with the first, but I liked it nonetheless. Hannay and a small group of friends/colleagues must infiltrate enemy forces and collect information about a stirring in the East during WWI. Hannay poses as a Dutchman fresh from the Boer conflicts in South Africa, the Scotsman Sandy goes underground with the Turks, and the American Blinkiron poses as [wait for it] a brash American. (side note: Since this was audio, I would like to mention how horrible the American accent was in this British reader's mouth; a combination of southern drawl with western sensibilities for the man from Ohio. Awful. Awfully hilarious, that is.)They meet up in Constantinople, decipher clues, and have some good-ol'-boy adventures. I admit it was good fun. However, the craft of the work wasn't fantastic. I frequently laughed out loud at the grand generalizations about the Germans as a people ("they know nothing of psychology," "they have no imagination," "you can only trick them with a sheer bluff," etc.), as well as the convenient superhuman qualities of our heroes ("Luckily, I was fluent in Dutch and German" "fortunately he was incredibly strong," "he was the greatest hunter that ever lived"). Since I constantly teach my own students to "show, don't tell" I enjoyed how blatantly Buchan flaunted that rule and just told me so many details of the narrative and characters therein. Totally believable, Buchan. All in all, incredibly entertaining for a "jogging" book. There were a million twists and turns. I generally had to backtrack a little each time I picked it up since it was easy to get disoriented in the book, but it answered my plot-driven jogging partner requirement. I hear there are MORE Hannay adventures, but I don't know that I'll dive right back in. I'll let him rest for a bit.
