A classic epic fantasy series. One of the first I read in the genre, and one that comes highly recommended. Its a very standard fantasy plot - a slight variation on Tolkien. But it is very well written, and the characters are quite memorable. If you're new to the epic fantasy genre, this would be a good introduction. It doesn't provide much in the way of thought provoking or life changing material, but it's a good story, a fun read, and is quite engaging.

As a fan of the Mary Russell series who has also enjoyed some of the Kate Martinelli mysteries, I was completely surprised by this book. I expected a well written and intellectual cozy-type crime mystery, but instead got first a lengthy, detailed, and horrifying personal account of Allen Carmichael's Vietnam War experiences including return to the U.S. and attempts to live unassisted with post-traumatic stress (although fiction and a different war, the first half of this book reminded me in many ways of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken). Then, the second half of the book, which takes place about 30 years later finds Carmichael in a dark psychological thriller as he tries to protect Jamie, the 12-year-old son of a mysterious and (again) horrifyingly abusive father. There is a reason for the Vietnam background, and it is certainly well-written, but I'm not completely sure it needed to be as lengthy. It seems a bit like two different, but related books.

I received a copy of this through GoodReads First Reads program. Definately has an interesting title. The book is basically 12 separate stories, all of which the book states were previously published in slightly different formats in magazines such as Rolling Stone, Hustler, LA weekly, Vanity Fair, and Men's Journal. The stories were all interesting, often covering topics I had previously heard about in the news (such as the Aryan Nation, the WTO riots in Seattle, and the dogs that killed the woman in San Francisco) but with Evan Wright's version filling in all the dark details that I had previously not known. The one thing I was a bit disappointed with though was how dated most of these stories were. One was previously published in 2007, but all the others are stories from 1997 to 2002. It felt a bit like "old news", especially when outdated details would be included, such as a mention of President Bill Clinton. Evan Wright definately does have a knack though for getting all the background info and "the rest of the story" as they say, so I will give this book a good solid 3-stars.
