How is this book a companion book to The Giver? I haven't read it in forever but if there is any connection between the two it is very loose. The story had an interesting setting and plot, but it was left underdeveloped and oversimplified. Three stars might be too generous, but I didn't hate it, it just didn't live up to its potential.

So i started reading this book and didn't realize until i was almost finished with it that this was the second book in this series... And you know what, it didn't matter that it was. Even though it was referring to events that had happened in the first book, it explained them enough you were lost at all. Everything made sense.

Finally got around to finishing this book. The delay wasn't because it was bad it's just long and heavy and each time I picked it up it seemed like I'd be reading it forever. This is a complete overview of the Gulag system from its inception to after its demise. It is filled with facts and interesting stories and it's clear the author knows what she's talking about. A few of the later chapters like the one on survival strategies I feel would have been better woven into the main story. Unlike a lot of other nonfiction I read this book devotes a fair amount of time to talking about women in the system both including quotes and information by and about women throughout and devoting a chapter to their particular struggles.

The book first appealed to me by it's more than unusual look, a few pages in, and I was hooked by everything else. Christopher Moore's witty, and neurotic writing style will keep the reader in till the very last page, when the reader soon realizes they're begging for it not to be over.
