This story is hilarious. It has such Douglas Adams moments, I totally love it.

I expected to like this book much more than I did. I loved the first one and everyone who’s read this sequel said the Perilous Journey wasn’t a whit behind its predecessor. I don’t know, then, if it was something about my mood or my preferences that swayed my opinion, but I didn’t find this book nearly as charming as The Mysterious Benedict Society. This sequel is more action-packed than the first, more full of adventure. For most people, that’s probably a good thing. But I thrive more on character development and witty dialogue — I tend to glaze over “exciting” action scenes whether it be in movies or in books — and so this book just wasn’t as fun as the first. There were still exciting moments of watching the foursome use their unique talents to solve interesting puzzles, but the "climactic" ending fell a little bit flat for me. I felt like there were significantly fewer twists and riddles than the first one, and I missed that. Nevertheless, I’m still planning on reading the third one, once I get my hands on it (we’re on a long hold list at the library right now) — and I still recommend that you read The Mysterious Benedict Society if you haven’t yet!

Good read and some helpful insights into appropriating Patristic readings of the scripture. I follow and generally agree with his argument that we should listen to how many of the early Christian interpreters approached the Old Testament and that this should inform our own reading of the text. Where this breaks down for me, is Heine avoids some of the difficulties inherent in patristic approaches. For example, his ressourcement project points to the recovery of anological, tropological and allegorical readings of the Old Testament, but as Heine seeks to portray these in a positive light, he neglects to mention the instances where these meanings are not derivative of the literal sense but diametrically opposed to it. It seems to me, that this needs to be wrestled with a little bit more directly if we are going to give patristics space in our hermeneutic. With this small caveat, I enjoyed this book immensely and will happily refer back to it. Heine does a good job of describing the interpretive approaches of the early church, their use of the Septuagint, apologetic use of the law, readings of historical narrative, prophets and the psalms. All in all a good read.

Fairy-tale spoof. I laugh hard reading this one. The unique thing about this book is the way the story is presented as an abridged version of S. Morgenstern's classic work "The Princess Bride". Goldman made that up (no Morgenstern exist), but it's a fresh approach. And it's effective in making fun of fantasy/fairy tales genre.

My students told me that this book wasn't as good as the first, but I totally disagree. I thought the past history of the coven was needed. Truly the reader learns the depth of despair Edward feels upon what he thinks is Bella's death. The Jacob twist is frighteningly good. I liked this one as much as the first.

Olivia holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the coast guard and is a helicopter pilot trying to stop narcotics heading towards US soil. Her twin brother Danny was an undercover DEA agent and was brutally murdered two years previously and despite pressure she believes that not enough is being done to track down and bring the murderers to justice. Fortunately her job gives her access to information that she wouldn't normally have and is now set upon working the case herself and tracking them down. Rico Cortes is an undercover DEA agent who has been working on the case for two years and Olivia's snooping is damaging that case and putting him in jeopardy so he decides to pretend to have information for her, meet and scare her off but of course he was not ready for the impact she would have on him. Usually in the romance genre the male is the dominant character in the story but not in this case, both were really strong and tough and quite capable on their own. Olivia is not only admired and respected in her career but had previously under took special training in self defence and use of weapons and is more than capable of defending herself should the need arise. Some readers may have found Olivia too tough and would have preferred Rico to take the lead but for me this is what I liked and I thought that Olivia's character is what made the book stand out. The only thing I didn't like was the ending, for me it ended too abruptly. I felt a little cheated as I wanted to read about them being together as a couple. Yes I know that they love each other and will be together but that is not the same as reading about it - it would have been better with an epilogue. Having said that I still loved this book and couldn't mark it down because of that and I gave it 5/5 stars. I will definitely be on the lookout for any new titles from Rita Henuber. You know, stylistically, it is really unique, and the storyline intrigued me at first, but it moved to slow for me. Others I'm sure will love it, but I generally enjoy more plot driven books.

The verdict: Every bit as intriguing the second time around. I would recommend this book to everybody, even if you're not into historical fiction. It's simply a brilliant, well-written novel. Previous comments: In anticipation of the move release in February 2008, starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson (it's hard to go wrong with those two, but you never know with movies-from-books!), I'm revisiting one of my favorite books ever - one of my top three, at least. I couldn't put it down the first time (see original review below); I can't wait to see what effect it'll have on me the second time 'round! Original review: First-rate storytelling from Philippa Gregory. This is one of my favorite books of all time, and remains unrivalled by any of her subsequent novels, including the somewhat disappointing sequel, The Boleyn Inheritance. It's one of those rare books (I think I've only read three in my life, the others being Memoirs of a Geisha and Devil in the White City.) that have kept me glued to the pages - you know those books that have you stirring your macaroni and cheese with one hand and reading with the other? Yeah, this one resulted in a lot of burnt macaroni. Gregory remains my favorite historical fiction writer. History provides the stories and characters, but she breathes life into them to make it all seem completely new. Magical!

Very original characters, although for some reason I really could not connect with them. This book, on the whole, was not what I had expected. I feel like the author tried to hard to have a lot of very unique details, which made it a bit hard to get into, although well written. The racial situations seemed a bit unrealistic and left up in the air. Glad I got it from the library and didn't spend my money on it. A quick read.
