The first in a series of Icelandic mystery novels. Intriguing story and good atmosphere. I just got a whole box full of Scandinavian mysterys from a friend - the result of post Girl with the Dragon Tattoo reading. The Girl books are going to be hard to match however.

God. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I love the indian mythology that is so prominent in this story. I loved how ruthless Alisa could be and how, at times, she could even be portrayed as a strong heroine. However, this wasn't the case most of the time. Mostly, Alisa just seemed careless and stupid which you seem to be the case for ya heroines these days. Like the way she treated Polly and Ray? Okay, we get it, you can get any guy you want. So why go after Ray? It just seemed completely pointless to me. A lot of the risks she also took seemed very pointless and just seemed to put everyone in danger. I get that you need drama for a good plot but there were better and cleverer ways of doing this. Basically. I think that Christopher Pike should stick to teen thrillers rather than teen fantasy. P.S. Can no one here spell her name right?!

What a beautiful book! Really, that's the only word I can think of to describe it. I'm an avid Kleypas fan, and have adored many of her books, but I think this one just might be her best written work to date. It is carefully crafted, with so many true and tender moments, it makes the heart melt. We meet our heroine at a young age, and discover her magic right along with her. The magic isn't just in the fact that she can make glass come to life, but in the fact that she's sweet and loving and so worthy of the love that has been denied her for the majority of her life. It is rare for me to really fall in love with a heroine as much as the hero in a novel, but I just adored Lucy. She reacted to the things that happened to her in much the same way I might, not with dramatic outbursts, but with a down-to-earth and palpable sorrow, and quiet dignity. Our hero Sam, the Doctor Who-lovin', geeky hottie with a commitment phobia, made me fall both in love and lust. He is just my kind of guy, nerdy but still all-man. I loved most of all his interactions with his niece, Holly. These provided a contradiction for the reader to his adamant aversion to commitment, that even while he was spouting off about never falling in love, he'd already committed himself to a little girl wholeheartedly. I loved the slow slide these two took toward love, and their "I don't love you"'s that so obviously meant the opposite. I loved that Sam was completely oblivious to the fact that he was in love until very shortly toward the end. I loved the super romantic climax in the airport, and I loved that Sam didn't expect Lucy to give up on a dream of hers so that they could be together. The epilogue was all kinds of ooey gooey goodness! I am excited by this series, and the direction in which Ms. Kleypas is going here. I absolutely can't wait for Alex's story!

I'm only about 1/3 of the way through this particular book, but Goudge has once again managed to write things that I thought only I knew. Her descriptions of communication with nature are so completely aligned with my experience that it makes me uneasy. Thrilled, but uneasy. I've spent so long seeing the world the way she did, not knowing there was anyone else who understood, and to find this... it's unsettling. I've also read Gentian Hill and Green Dolphin Street, as well as some of her collections. Having seen her tolerance and absolute reverence for nature, I'm starting to wonder if her character Froniga isn't meant to be Goudge herself in some way, perhaps with slightly less self-awareness. Of course, her characters are for the most part not modern, and so they are even further removed from the understanding of their situation that Goudge, as a creator, can claim. Don't let the title fool you. Goudge is devotedly religious, but not in the dogmatic, traditional way. She's edited and published several collections of various religious works, mostly poetry. My agnosticism and skepticism occasionally verge on cynicism. However, I have never been able to find any for Elizabeth Goudge's work. Her writing assumes an understanding between people, nature, and any sort of spirit that precludes meaningful conflict. Though I think most people could find something to love in this book, I would particularly recommend her work to any Wiccan, especially one that wishes to combine some elements of Christianity or Judaism or any monotheistic religion with Paganism in any form. She is all peace and harmony, and though I know little of her life, her ability to comfort makes me wish I'd known her, even a little.

Duh. First half is fun for the trivia, but Gladwell's research is kind of random and any science (?) is missing.

Jodi Picoult's prolific and somewhat erratic catalogue of novels may be topped by the excellent "Keeping Faith." Picoult's story, as usual offers a major dilemma for her all-too-human characters. This time Mariah and Colin have just dissolved their marriage because Colin can't seem to keep his anatomy to himself when he gets around members of the opposite sex. Mariah, with Colin's blessing, will receive custody of their seven-year-old daughter Faith. Problems arise when Faith, who has never been in a church or been exposed to the bible, starts reciting biblical passages and speaking in tongues. Things get stranger when she seemingly performs a couple of miraculous cures. Word gets out and cultish religious fanatics start camping out around Mariah's house and Faith's miracles gain the attention of an infamous Tele-Atheist, determined to prove the whole thing a hoax. Picoult twists and turns the screws of this story of religion, fanaticism, parenting under the most extreme conditions, divorce and love. Like many of her her books, Picoult offers no pat answers, and for many the ending will be unsatisfying. I found the ending delicious.

There is only one Miles Vorkosigan (as opposed to Cordelia Naismith) story that's a must-read in my opinion, and that's "Mountains of Mourning" and that's why I give this book 4 stars. The rest are fun read but don't have the hard edge of the Cordelia novels, with only incremental world-building.

Horrible book. The author keeps repeating the same details over and over. Focus is on how Google is disrupting 'old media', rather than on the actual story of Google.
