Alice Hoffman does a wonderful job of weaving a story that traces a town from it's beginning to the present. She follows the descendants of the original families, choosing one or two people from each time period to focus on. Each chapter is a different person's story, from a different decade. I love Hoffman's incorporation of supernatural details and just enough description so that you can feel like you're there. She does an excellent job tying the characters and other elements together over time. I've always been a fan of Hoffman's writing style, and this book doesn't disappoint. She makes her characters believable and creates such a beautiful setting for her story. I highly recommend!

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. A presumptuous topic presented by an arrogant, condescending author that lacks any real substance, or breadth for his case. As a Christian, Barna seems militant and hate-filled. This long, drawn-out essay would have failed a Freshman English course at Owensboro Community College due to its inconsistency, lack of fluidity, and faulty support. However, militant, fundamentalist evangelicals may really get a kick out of it.

Took me a long time to get into this book. But he has some interesting insights about different "freedoms." The characters are quite complicated and events somewhat hard to relate to. The ending did pull things together which I appreciate.

A reread, and I definitely enjoyed it better my second go around. Not for those looking for a reason why Thompson is so talked about, but there are signs for the storm to come. Mostly for those journalism freshmen looking to get a sneak peak to the cynical, older shell just over the way, or so I believe. Quit aside, and just a chance to be a bit nit picky, would have loved some 'flying apostrophes.'
