This is an extremely well-written book that deals with a unique topic. Fadiman explores the beliefs of Hmong immigrants and American doctors, focusing on the case of a young Hmong girl with epilepsy. It is one of the most emotionally draining books I've ever read, and I deliberately took a break from reading it for a few days at about the middle point. Unlike other books I have read dealing with tough issues, Fadiman brings this narrative to such a personal level, and so clearly demonstrates that tragedy could have been averted by better cross-cultural understanding, that as a reader it was difficult to take in.

9th&up. While the beginning of this book took a little mental adjusting for a techno-neophyte like me, a couple of pages in- when the action went crack-happy in a hurry- I was hooked. I quickly got into the story and couldn't put it down. The stream of google, wikipedia and x-bot references that felt almost like ads was a bit irritating, but I actually liked the way Doctorow wove in mini-lectures about different technological tricks and devices. Guaranteed to (rightfully?) make you quite paranoid about the path our world is taking. Think an updated version of 1984 for the modern teen. References to drugs and sex and a high level of detailed techno-speak make it a read for older teens.

This book comes highly recommended from Andrew Heffner, and he's usually right about these sorts of things.

to preserve the storyline in my head I should have annotated the table of contents with time/character for each chapter. after 150 pages I returned to beginning and restarted to clear up confusion.

Most Steinbeck books I really like, it's only it takes quite a while before his style seeps into me to the extent I can really be there, picking apples or whatnot. I don't know if it's a fault with this book or if I were weirder than usual when I read it, but here it didn't happen before the end. So, merely an okay for this.

This book is one every teenager and twentysomething should read, and one that people should re-read. I admit I usually read it once a year, and there's just something about the combination of the story and Barker's artwork that really hits home with the theme of appreciating what you have and making certain to make the most of it. Barker's best at this point in time.
