Cute story about the lion who thinks that he doesn’t look stylish enough for the party and goes to the barber shop to curl his hear, to the store to get a new jacket. When he goes to the party, his friends don’t recognize him and hut the door a front of his nose. Feeling hurt he walks home and gets wet from the rain. At that moment he decides to give his friends one more shot and goes back to the party where he gets recognized. Very cute story, but unfortunately the illustrations are not that exciting.

This was good and a little hard to get into. At first it skips around so much I was lost. In the middle it ties it all together but it was hard to keep reading.

Two little gems not quite novellas, but illustrated short stories. The Snow Goose is a mite too sophisticated for a young reader, but The Small Miracle is a lovely story for all ages. Gallico charms the reader with beautifully drawn characters and settings. These stories feel like classics; to reveal anything of the plot or setting would give away too much. One of those books that calls out to re-read.

This is as good as history gets. I revisited this book after 25 years and confirmed my opinion -- this is one of the dozen or so books on my best-of-the-best shelf. If you only read one book about Hitler and the Nazis, this is the one. Exhaustively researched, abundantly footnoted, but also as engaging a story as you'll find, written by a guy who was perfectly placed and equipped to tell the history -- a German speaking journalist who lived in Nazi Germany and was personally on hand for many of Hitler's speeches. This time through I listened to the Audible edition currently available, and it made for a great audio book. An interesting addition is the 1990 afterward, not included in the much earlier edition I read in 1988. Amusingly Shirer (who was in his late 80s by 1990) tells that the book was "coolly received" by professional historians at the time of publication; and that Germans were fairly outraged at the book. A dose of bitter medicine it must have been.

"Magical Realism" really is the term for this book. It's set in a fantasy world with fantastical things happening, which really begins to seem real. I liked it, but it wasn't a "can't put it down" kind of book.

I went ahead and gave this four stars even thought I didn't finish it. I thought that it was very well written, it just didn't hold my attention very well, because I'm not familiar with a lot of the bands and people they are talking about, and I have a bunch of other stuff I want to read.
