couldn't make it to the end - not sure i agree with all the author says about teaching our children - we "teach" by doing and they learn from our actions - parents need to get "down time" but our kids didn't choose to come into this world so we should be careful when teaching them how we value our time - and how we value them

This is really my first foray into urban fantasy, and I loved it. In the world of Zoo City, people have animal "familiars" that follow them around, but only if you've murdered someone or caused the death of someone (as far as I can tell). There is nothing you can do to get rid of it. It follows you around for the rest of your life. It's a great metaphor for anyone who tries to make a fresh start. We may admire people who can overcome adversity, but as a society, we try to keep you "in your place" as much as possible. Felons are supposed to have "served their time", but for the rest of their life, they're treated as criminals. It makes it difficult to get a job, get housing, or just lead a normal life. It's why recidivism is so high. Stylistically, I love how Beukes interrupts her narrative with bits from newspaper articles, documentary footage and even an IMDB-type website - complete with viewer reviews, including someone adding a link to porn. Very funny! Granted all these additional bits are written, but it does give me a feel as to what the future of books cold be. I imagine a digital text with actual fake-film footage, or mock-up websites, complete with working links. Just an idea. I love the style and language of Zoo City. I love slang that's written without explanation. You just figure it out as you go along, as if this book was written in the world of Zoos and you're just expected to understand. You don't explain a text message (unless you're an older writer) in your narrative, why explain slang? Overall a great book, that does what great Sci-Fi should: entertain while also bringing up larger social issues. Really looking forward to Lauren Beukes next work!

Witty and romantic, I loved this book but hated the ending. What is so wrong with letting two characters live happily ever after? That being said I'm glad I read it and would recommend it.
