I really enjoyed reading this book. It humanizes the "freaks" - every page Dunn added a new twist but they all seemed believable and even relatable. I was a little disappointed in the ending - it seemed like a cop out to me - but otherwise I would recommend this book to anyone.

Cal was an extremely interesting narrator. I loved the way this novel ebbed and flowed - the author did an excellent job of revealing details at exactly the right time, whether they came chronologically or not. The topic was unique and sucked me in. The other amazing thing was that Cal's point of view managed to be both a male and female perspective. Right after I finished this book, I picked up the New Yorker and read an article about a South African runner who is a hermaphrodite and having read "Middlesex" definitely lent a sensitivity to my reaction to this runner. Having spent two weeks in the head of someone so similar made the article an extra-interesting read. I loved the events of this novel, from Desdemona's silkworm shed in Turkey to her mock-courtship with Lefty on the boat, and from Callie's relationship with 'the object' to her transformation to Cal as she made her way across the country. Themes: gender, identity, coming of age, Greek culture, immigration, sex, family, secrets, Detroit

Holy fuck I can't believe it's over :( Awesome series however. Burned through it in a few days. Barrons ♥♥♥♥♥ :P Had these on my to read list for a while (read: so long I'd forgotten) and found the first four second hand. I started reading after I'd bought the fifth book (don't you just hate it when you love a series and gotta wait to gaps or new books? Yeah well, I wasn't gonna let that happen) and one of my first thoughts was "Why didn't I read this sooner?" Quickly following that was "Thank fuck that I already have all the books!" I think the wait between 4 and 5 would have killed me. Lit.er.ally! Will read the Dani trilogy, but I'm hankering for the final 2 books in the series. Stupid 2 year wait. 5/5

Ok, I'll admit it; I'm not hip. I do not understand this book, it's purpose or why I had it on my to read list. What a time waste. My sister G suggested it was an inside joke & I must concur. A blurb on the back says the author had wit without preciousness, I emphatically disagree; the outlay of the book & style of language seemed to want the reader to express it adorable & cute. The story (?) stupid & irratic. Again, it could just be me as I'm not hip.

Jan 2016 - I tried reading this book again and this time got halfway through it. I have a long list of books I'd like to get to in the next few months (two for book club) and though it really is a beautiful book, I'm going to have to set it down again (or return it to the library, rather). If I had a long stretch of uninterrupted time to read this, I could finish it, but alas, that is not my life right now. 2013 - I read maybe a quarter of the book. It was actually beautifully written and a premise that appeals to me, but just too slow-moving for me at this point in my life. I'd like to finish it eventually.

Weird and way too long. All it had going for it was good writing style. I'll take the author's sweet simple "Mary and O'Neil" over this malarky anyday.

Overall, I have to say, good end to a good series. The book itself was a little too busy -- there were too many loose ends that needed to be tied together. But I liked it. Brings a nice closure.

Saying "this book really changed my life" is a pretty cheesy and cliche thing to do, but seriously. George Kinder is a Buddhist financial planner, and his tips on how to approach your financial life can seriously apply to ANY part of your life. Stuff like "Pain is our bell of awakening. Whenever Pain rings its bell, we face a choice. We can rush off after some old habit to cling to, like overspending. Or we can move forward into freedom and adulthood."
