I am beginning this book as I saw the BBC production and found it fascinating. THis is a Dickens I have not read, so I am going to read it while I watch the PBS showing in the next few weeks. Dickens created the most unusual characters.

** spoiler alert ** While I didn't love this second installment as much as I did Twilight, I was still enthralled and found New Moon to be un-put-downable. I missed Edward's presence and the spark and intensity that came from their interactions in Twilight. So much of New Moon was spent on Bella's depression (and near catatonia) over Edward's absence and then her risky behavior in order to "hear" Edward again. I enjoyed her friendship and deepening relationship with Jacob but I couldn't get over viewing it as "second best." I like Jacob and hate his hurt over losing Bella... the inevitable chosing of sides... but for me, it's Bella and Edward. The climax in Volterra had me on the edge of my seat and closing the book every other page, reminding myself to take a breath. So suspenseful! The only thing that did not ring true for me was Bella's reaction to Edward's proposal. For someone who is more than willing to become a vampire, cut ties with her family, and completely change her life as she knows it and choose immortality... her obvious skittishness about marriage seemed unreasonable. Overall, a thoroughly readable account that brings Edward and Bella back together. Excited to see what awaits them in Eclipse!

Gideon Crew is the newest leading man by Preston & Child. He is emotionally driven in all that he does, whether it's avenging his father's ruined reputation or taking on a new challenging mission. Gideon's Sword is an exciting ride once you get started. I really enjoyed this new book by Preston & Child. I love all of the Pendergast novels so it was refreshing to have a character by P&C that is wild, unpredictable and definitely a bit crazy. I really enjoyed the cat and mouse by Crew and Nodding Crane. The story line kept me engaged from the beginning, and it seems like there's a new bunch of talented, unusual characters that P&C are creating for people. I did enjoy the fact that Crew was employed by Glinn and that there's a small possibility Crew and Pendergast could cross paths in the future! The only character that I didn't really care for was Orchid. I felt that for such a strong connection to form between both characters there was little support in the development area. I hope P&C will think about writing a prequel to know more about Crew's museum thieving days and how he acquired his skills to avenge his dad.

I wish he had engaged a ghost writer to beef up the book a bit. We needed a bit more meat on the bones. While he is a gifted comedian, I'd say he's just average on the memoir writing side. I also would have liked more of the detail of certain events in his life, more blow-by blow of signicant shows, romantic moments, family encounters,,something to make this book seem more personal.
