This book was painful to read, and not so much funny, as horrifying. If you want the funny side of Burroughs, I recommend reading his follow up book, Possible Side Effects. That one is genuinely funny. I was engaged the entire time I read this one, but I can't say that I particularly enjoyed the experience.

A good friend gave me this book - said I had to read it, she didn't know what to think. This book will make you think and if you know anyone like Macon, you'll also laugh. But there's a deeper message about identity, hip-hop and the siphoning of Black culture by white America. Mansbach explores how universal hip-hop is, yet how rooted it is in Black diasporic culture and that a love for hip-hop doens't necessarily mean a love for social justice. Mansbach also reflects the structure of hip-hop in his writing approach, using the beats and timing so familiar to those of us from the hip-hop generation. A provocative read - I'd suggest reading it in a book club or with a friend. You're gonna want to talk about it.

Fun book, very fun. His Handling Sin is better, but that's because Handling Sin is the funniest book I've read in years. I would highly recommend both. This one is also surprisingly bawdy.

This book was good - it kept you guessing and developed the protagonist from someone you couldn't really relate to into a more understandable person you rooted for. I liked the spare writing style and the close POV with the main character.

It's really good so far. I read it before in fifth grade, but I'm rereading it again. The author uses so much detail about his surroundings, and I bet that if the author got lost in the mountains, she could survive for the rest of her life because she knows so much!
