A wonderful book of letters by a woman living in the Appalachian Mtns. One of my favorite books!

My immediate concern prior to beginning Ready Player One was that I am not a gamer and never really have been. Sure I played a bit of Nintendo and even some Atari and yes I have some fond memories of wasting beautiful, sunny afternoons trying to defeat Mario Bros but, unlike quite a few of my friends, I moved away from that lifestyle in my early teens. I did however grow up an entertainment junkie so I’m pretty fluent with 80’s movies, music, TV and general pop culture, plus I still consider Back to the Future one of the greatest movies ever made. It’s likely that this aided in my enjoyment of RPO and without it I certainly would’ve missed out on so many of the “Oh yeah, I remember that!!” moments and not being a true gamer certainly didn’t detract from the page turning delight offered here. RPO takes place in the not so distant future and the majority of the story takes place inside the OASIS, an ultra-realistic virtual universe where most of the world spends their lives linked into since the real world on planet Earth has become a depressing wasteland of poverty, corruption and crime. We only get brief glimpses of actual life in the US but the details provided are believable enough and paint a picture of extensions of real problems we face today such as running out of fossil fuels, food and land to support an increasing population as well as an increase in poverty and crime and a mass decrease in general love of life. Pretty bleak stuff, however when seen through the eyes of Wade Watts aka “Parzival” a nerdy, overweight teenage gamer it’s easy to avoid the more “adult-oriented” political aspects of this future dystopia and focus on the adventure at hand. This adventure is realized through Parzival as we scour the OASIS for a hidden “Easter Egg” left somewhere inside of this sprawling universe by the game’s creator James Halliday. The first OASIS resident to find this said egg will inherit the ridiculously large fortune amassed and left behind by the creator’s reclusive nerd genius. With millions of people hunting for this prize and the media following its course you can bet this is a pretty big phenomenon, and to win it you better be well versed in 80s pop culture… So off we go!! All in all, Ready Player One is a fun and lighthearted trip through a believable future and a nerd-tastic look back at 80s pop culture whose importance in helping to shape future generations has yet to disappear while still strongly remaining a decade deliciously worth mining for juicy entertainment gems. … Except the hairstyles… Please.. Lets never bring back those ridiculous hairstyles!!

I saw this in Amazon, and I thought it was a good read having made the Oprah Book Club. I don't know, I thought the plot build-up was good, but the ending just didn't live up to it.

This understated account of a Scottish fencing crew in England is full of dark humour. Refreshingly strange.

I'm not sure I would enjoy this book now as much as I did a few years ago when I was in the middle of my own created journey. There's a passage about sloths early in the text that is hysterical, beautiful, and encouraged me to adopt my own imaginary pet sloth, Slowy. Slowy is currently sleeping.

So good!! This was a quick read for me because I couldn't put it down. Although it was a serious part in history, Benioff still managed to make you laugh. A great story, definitely read!

I'm reading this in my Language Arts Class! It's a pretty good memoir, I just think there should be more riveting parts. It's not something that I would walk in the bookstore and buy for myself.
the best guilty read ever. supposedly not historically accurate but who cares... it's scandalous!! love it. also a great look into living as a young woman in the royal court and their lack of choices. queen elizabeth makes more sense now after reading what her parents may have been like.

I can't believe I wasted any time on this book - I still don't understand what all the hype was about.
