Her best book yet. I liked the "drawn from the headlines" story that provides the basis for this book, and I really enjoyed the way the story played out.

This is a required reading for my internship. The first half of the book highlights key contributors in the movement, while the last half discusses principles of techniques. I enjoyed reading about the historical roots of short-term psychodynamic therapy. I now half a much greater appreciation for what spurred the development of a shortened approach to treatment. The authors suggest that an increased level of activity of the therapist is the sine qua non of a short-term treatment. They also suggest maintaining therapeutic focus (presenting problem) and analysis of resistance are fundamental techiniques in a successful short-term intervention. Here is my problem with short-term models in general (dynamic or otherwise)-it minimizes the importance of relationship. This might sound strange but, short-term dynamic therpay and long-term psychoanalysis feel very similar to me in that they both elevate interpretion as the key factor in client growth. Both talk of the importance of relationship in terms of transference and countertransference, however the growth comes from making the unconscious conscious. I tend to believe growth happens in the mysterious exchange of relationship that only occurs in a safe, trusting environment. With all that said, I do recommend this book as an introductory text to Short-term psychodynamic interventions. It exposes the reader to the most salient information in this modality. It is a nice starting point.

I started reading this at Borders (in August of 2007), but about twenty pages in I decided that sitting next to a crazy man was totally not worth the hassle of reading this book to decide if I wanted it. It was rather funny, I guess, but not as funny as the awkwardness created by the crazy man. Oh, crazy people. They so crazy. EDIT: I PURCHASED IT. It's quite good.

This is a strange book. I will not rate it because part of me wants to give it 1 star and part wants to rate it 4. Parts of the story was completely ridiculous and unbelievable and yet it was a page turner. I neglected life by reading it. I did not agree with the author that this family would turn on each other like this especially in the Ammish religion. I don't have a perfect family but I cannot think of anything they could do that would make me react the way this family did. The other reason I do not agree with this family's vengence is because of when in real life the man shot and killed those ammish children in the ammish school a few years back, the ammish forgave immediately. I just can't believe they would only treat outsiders this way and not their own flesh and blood. There were other discrepencies in the book but this was the one I just could not swallow. It is the first book of three. As soon as I finished this book I went immediately to library to get the other three. However the library was closed for the day, ugh. I did like how clean and spirtual it is. I liked learning more of the Ammish life.

Quirky, dark story of a dysfunctional family of individuals seeking transcendence through spelling, Hare Krishnas, and kleptomania....sound odd yet? at times, I was really enjoying it and at others, I could not wait for it to be finished.

This was one of the strongest, most powerful books I've ever read. It's the story of Liesel Meminger, a young girl who is taken by her mother to live with a foster family in the town of Molching at the advent of the second world war. As food and money grow tighter and tighter, Liesel and her friend Rudy find freedom in the power of books- books that they have to go to great lengths to get their hands on. This is one of the saddest books I've ever read. It made me look at an entire period in world history and shake my head in disbelief. It also has a strong message about the current world in which we live and it celebrates the power of the printed word to change and heal and set people free. I really wish that everyone I know would read this book. In Australia, where it was originally published, it was realeased as an adult novel, but here in the States it is billed as young adult fiction. Don't let the label fool you- this book is a must-read.

Last week I found myself reading a football book. I picked up this book because everything else I read but Michael Lewis I very much enjoyed and I thought he could bring a unique voice to his subject matter normally known for substandard literature. Don't get me wrong, I am a big football fan. The problem is that reading about football is usually a whole different scenario than watching football or playing football. What I found in this football book were three or four different stories in one. The main story was what the movie was made from and it's the story about a boy named Michael Oher. It's a story of a neglected child, a black boy raised in the ghetto the son of an addicted mother and no father. It's an all too familiar story but reading about it is hard nonetheless. Michael's story is unique in that Michael got a chance, Michael got to grow up safe, with the future. It's the story of nature versus nurture, and nurture always wins out. The second story is the story of the NFL. It's a story of offense linemen versus defense of wine. It's a story of the chess game that goes on between great minds on the sidelines using massive human beings as ponds in a complex contest of strength. What surprised me was that story was also great. Michael Lewis successfully follows the evolution of football from a running game to a passing game, and subsequently to a devastating short yardage full field frontal attack in a system perfected by coach named Walsh. The third story is the story of college football recruiting. It's the story of the links that coaches will go to secure the best talent in the nation. It's the story of the power houses – Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, LSU, and Ole Miss. The personal visits and the pleading attention to get Michael Oher to sign with their team was a case study useful for any blue-chip athlete. The fourth story is the truly American story of rags to riches of self-made success and determination. It was a story of a man who rises from poverty and rides the capricious wave of capitalism to a modicum of success and then turns around and gives back to those in need. And that story was good too. I found myself rooting for Michael, and his family, and even for a team I never really liked before. I found myself rooting for right wing evangelical Christians. I found myself nearly in tears and I found myself cheering silently.

I'm having a really hard time rating this! 3 seems too low, but is exactly what I thought of it - I liked it! I had a good time reading this, but it's not going to stick with me. I'm glad I read it. The ending is a bitch!
