An odd-ball blend of autobiography and short fictions, organized around a motif that would be almost cute if Levi didn't approach everything in his life with somber, intelligent reflection. As odd as it sounds, this is exactly the sort of writing I would expect from a life-long chemist. Even when he waxes heavy on entomological minutia, (something which I think he gets from his fellow Italian, Vico), this is all clearly the product of a highly analytical mind. He barely touches on what happened to him in Auschwitz here, but you can feel the weight of it pressing down almost constantly. The old world haunts, as ever.

I tried to like this book. I read it three times (okay, because there was nothing else to do), and I wanted it to be worth my while... and it was, probably. I didn't necessarily love it, but that didn't mean it was a waste of time. I could relate to Cassie a lot, although I didn't like what she did. Kevin wasn't interesting, and Sterling, well... she was such a stereotypical character, she bored me to tears. It was okay. I wouldn't recommend anyone to read it immediately, but it was okay.

Another trip to the Dark Tower completed. This time, the last three books were not quite the disappointment that they were originally; while King's prose is sometimes lacking, the story more than makes up for it, and it hangs together much better with the first four fresh in your mind. As the ka-tet broke, and each member went to the clearing at the end of the path, I felt that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach--no tears, but by the time you make it here, these are good friends, and it hurts to see them go. And what Roland finds behind that door at the top of the tower? I don't think it really could've been any different; the only other way the story might've finished is when the door at the bottom closed behind him. In another five years or so, maybe I'll meet Roland in the desert again, and join him on his quest for the man in black.
