The story itself was intriquing, but it was very drawn out (the book was 700 pages). I would only recommend it if you have the patience and like longer books.

A little drier than the Odyssey in my opinion, but still decent reading material for a lazy week. This is not quite the version I read.

Eh. Another "from the point of view of mythical/historical women" book, this is the story of Helena, mother of Constantine, first Christian ruler of ancient Rome. Ties to Avalon come with Helena, who was raised as a priestess there. This is written by the woman who took over the "Avalon" franchise when Bradly kicked the bucket. Guess that's why despite its promise it pretty much sucks. I left it in my hotel room. On purpose.

Sad subject, with a bit of mythology, science and the stories of two of society's "misfits" seeking a place in the world. Though well written, and by such a young author, it just didn't do much for me. I'll be interested to see what others think.

I'm reading this book now for my Janis Joplin research. Does anyone know how this compares to the Alice Echols book, and the personal details that Love, Janis, relates? This book was written a couple years after her death, and there are lots of interviews with friends and family in here.

This is perhaps my favorite children's book and may be the book the has had the greatest influence on my taste in artwork and design. On a purely literary level, it's an adaptation of Pilgrim's Progress, though the unique aspect of this version is that it uses selections from the original rather than modernizing the language. So, it's really more of an abridgement. But what really stands out in this book is the artwork. Each page of text, which really does not amount to more than a paragraph, has a beautiful illustration on the facing page. Many of the illustrations are quite grotesque, but I like that :)

I think it's the mark of a truly amazing author who can make her passion for the subject matter come alive for a reader -- any reader -- whether they happen to share that passion or not. Let me explain: I have to admit that, although I'm a huge anglophile, I haven't taken much more than a passing interest in British history, especially before the Regency era. I know a bit about Henry VIII and his wives, and I find it intriguing, but I wouldn't say I've gone out of my way to learn more. Katherine Longshore clearly knows a lot about the Tudors, which is very cool in and of itself. But what's truly remarkable is how she makes the king's court come completely alive in this book. Everything from the sumptuous clothes to the sinister inner workings to the complex and timeless human emotions that drove it all. I was so invested in this story and its main character, that I found myself rather glad that I didn't know the actual history very well -- because I very much wanted Longshore to tell it to me. And she did. In an ingenious and thoroughly entertaining way. I love, love, loved this lush and thrilling book.
