Hockey, snowmobiling, drinking -- these are the big things in Starvation Lake in northern Michigan. Gus, a 30-something newspaper guy, has returned to his hometown after a lawsuit lost him a job in the big city. The mysterious death of his former hockey coach ten years previously is brought back to the forefront when part of his snowmobile resurfaces, stirring up lots of small town resentments. The newspaper connection and the coldness factor reminded me of The Shipping News. Interesting and realistically flawed characters keep the story moving as the suspense builds. Good reminder that not all is as it seems in regards to small towns, coaches, friends and life in general.

i would be extremely interested to know what others think of this book. we read it for a class and discussed the aspects of violence inherent in desire and in language. and in departure from a particular norm. we talked about the purpose of fragmenting a subject so completely as to render it beyond human, beyond singular, beyond what can be understood. it is a 3 hour read if you just plow. but it is pretty intense. i wasn't sure if i like it or not, but it felt pretty powerful. and strange. so if you are a lesbian, let me know what you think about "the lesbian body."

(I read the second book Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies. My mistake.) I heard good buzz about Blake Snyder’s SAVE THE CAT! The Last Book on Screenwriting You’ll Ever Need. I write novels, but a lot can be learned about compelling storytelling from movies. So I ordered Snyder’s book from my county library share system and found I’d ordered the follow-up book by accident. SAVE THE CAT! Goes to the Movies is still full of insights useful to any writer. Snyder identifies story types and gives examples of movies that fit these structures: Monster in the House, Golden Fleece, Out of the Bottle, Dude with a Problem, Rites of Passage, Buddy Love, Whydunit, Fool Triumphant, Institutionalized and Superhero. Some of the films he gives as examples will make you nod your head and murmur, “Of course,” but others will surprise you. I think the message here is not so much there are only a certain number of plotlines that exist in the world, but that a story needs a rock-solid structure first and then can vary the rest of the details. Otherwise, writers run the risk of being wishy-washy, not able to pinpoint in their pitch and, later, to readers what their story really is about. If you have trouble identifying which of the categories your story fits, Snyder lists elements that should be there. For instance, under Rites of Passage, it is the hero who must change, not the world around him. Under Monster in the House, there must be a “sin,” some transgression that let the monster in. Buddy Love requires an incomplete hero who needs another to be whole. There are lots of valuable tips.

Of course it was incredible. Very strange and disturbing too. I'll have to sit with it a bit, and go back and read it again. I'm not sure I liked it more than Pale Fire, but it's been a while since I read that. I think I'll have to go back read that again now too, and I will have to investigate Nabokov's other work. I don't really know what to say about Lolita. Watching myself type these words and think of that novel at the same time make me feel practically mute or as though my writing capabilities are that of a four-year-old. I think you should just read Lolita if you haven't. It will provide you with a very rich, human experience, both in terms of it's allegorical power as well as in its constant virtuosic language. It's certainly a masterpiece. I would imagine the novel would be even better if you have a grasp of French, and I'm sure it helps even more if you have a degree in French literature, or, for that matter, multiple degrees in any number of fields such as Psychiatry or Film Theory (I don't have any of these) so that you can get all of his obscure references and jokes. But if a Philistine like me can enjoy this, I'm sure you will.

An excellent collection of re-tellings. The illustrations are absolutely chilling. A particular standout is the version of the Monkey's Paw found within, as well as the "Lost Hearts" tale. This was my first set of truly scary stories, found in one of those huge book sales. I creeped out everyone in the sixth grade. LOL
