I am a little embarassed that I read through the language and content of this book. I hoped it would get better as the story was established. I kept reading waiting for it to live up to all of the rave reviews I was hearing and I think that set me up for disappointment. if you go in not expecting much, you may be much better off.

This is definitely Atwood at her dystopian best, slightly less weird than Oryx and Crake although it's good to have some of the loose ends of the characters tied up. I liked it a lot, it had me gripped from early on and although a glossary might have been helpful at times if you are used to Atwood it's easy enough to get your hear around her other world. I liked it, as bleak and desolate the future for mankind she presents is there is always hope. I'm glad the endings have moved on from The Handmaid's Tale days too. Well worth a read I say, especially if you were haunted by Oryx and Crake.

This is a fictional account of a life in the gulags. The absence of chapters makes the book feel more like a day than if it had been separated by chapters, and it makes it difficult to set it down since you're constantly in a new section. It's very short and might provide a nice counterpoint to the Gulag Archipelago. I would also highly recommend taking a look at some of the poetry of Yevgeny Yevtushenko (just a few online). It's probably more uplifting than the Gulag Archipelago, from what I remember. It gives a sense of how a person needs to live to survive in those conditions.

Supposedly a true story it really is a story that seems unbelievable. It's very intense, brutal, sad, and happy.

Currently my favorite book. I marked up every margin because the characters were so REAL - I connected in so many ways with the characters, I felt what they felt, I could see my life in theirs. It also brought to life an era in history that is not very well-known - an entire country - the tiny Biafra - starved. The sister, the woman who is lost, signifies the entire country. I loved it, it was amazing, I tell everyone I see to read it.

This is a profoundly depressing book, yet captivating.

** spoiler alert ** Dark, intense beginning of a series about members of the mafia. Novella setting up the characters and the attraction between the MCs. I'm not usually a fan of reading about criminals still doing crime but this book pulled me right in. The scene setting is fabulous. Makes you feel like you are right there with the characters (even though I wouldn't want to be!). Since it's the start of a series, can only rate on what I've read so far. This is a very dark story, though, so will be interesting to see how the series advances. Beautiful book cover. Warning: For those who want to know...there's a scene that is dubious consent, a scene with rough sex and one of the MCs is married. Although no sex happens with the married MC in this volume, the attraction, thoughts and intent are there for the future.

There's a meme among much of the political left that the liberal viewpoint is devoid of ideology and is inherently pragmatic. There's also the meme that Jesus Christ, were he alive today, would be a liberal. American Savior, perhaps inadvertently, is the literary result of those memes. The idea is simple, in this case: Jesus has returned, and he wants to run for president. He gets together a small group of reporters and their families to make the run, and the book follows the campaign through election day. The book is mostly well-written. The annoying "we're going to name people who are famous without actually naming them, so here's a guy who has a first name that sounds like 'Wolf' and the last name 'Spitzer'" is throughout. The concept of Jesus is kind of weird, and the main character is frustratingly annoying. It's just a weird book. And, at the end of the day, it just feels like a stealth ideological attempt to co-opt a religious figure. The rest of the ideology hinted at in the book is pretty standard stereotyping as is, and Jesus keeps talking about how he's a different way of thinking while pretty much adopting left wing viewpoints. It's not really groundbreaking and mostly frustrating, especially if you have any political knowledge. Skip this one if you ever have the opportunity. It's not really worth the energy.

It was a painful year of waiting for the final book. But for my patience I was awarded with it coming out a month early and on my birthday, plus ten chapters were release before the book came out. This is the finale book in the trilogy and concludes the events we’ve been following. Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. It was a great way to end everything. By the end I forgot that only two weeks pass in the whole series. The final book is much heavier on the romance, but not too much that the plot suffers. I really enjoy watching Chloe understand her feelings and how strong of character she is. I hope Armstrong takes up Chloe again in the future. If you read the first two in the series then you won’t be disappointed with the ending. Well worth your time.
