I'm giving this four stars: not because it was a pleasant read or particularly well-written, but because it raises an issue that is important and very interesting. It did take me three tries to get through it- 2003 spring break, 2004 summer break, and 2007 book club. I think it is so interesting to think about how our appearances affect our lives. And I think it's really important to be conscious of the assumptions we make about other people based on their appearance. But beyond that, it's important to be conscious of how harshly we judge our own appearances. Now, Wolf takes it a bit further than that. She argues that the pressure to look a certain way is perpetrated specifically against women. It's used to keep us preoccupied with trying as hard as we can to fit the "Iron Maiden" image (with impossible or at least highly unlikely proportions) and then feelings of shame and failure when we don't. Thus we don't have time or energy to work as hard as we could at our jobs, or to organize political and social movements. It further damages us by puting us in competition with other women and destroying the bond that we should otherwise have simply because of the shared experience of being women. It's an interesting argument, and it makes a lot of sense (if you can wade through the clever but sometimes odd and certainly unnecessary metaphors). But the problem is, it's not at all clear who the bad guy is here. It's not just "men." I don't think she is at all saying that it's the man in your life who is trying to destroy you. I just kept picturing some "Wizard of Oz"-type-character in some big boardroom somewhere. Or maybe Dr. Evil? But all that aside, I feel like this book gave me some powerful mental tools to combat my own inner critic. And that makes it a success, I think.

Kickback p. m. terrell Chicago Spectrum Press, 2002 ISBN 1879260417 Mass Market Paperback Re-issued by Drake Valley Press, 2002 ISBN 0972818618 0-9728186-1-8-9728186-1-8 Sheila Carpenter is a recent college graduate, a farm girl just starting her career as a computer programmer in the big city, Washington, DC. Recruited by a prestigious computer consulting firm, she’s rented a lovely townhouse in Old Town Alexandria, a place she’s delighted to have even if she can’t afford any furniture to put in it yet. Sheila is living her dream. Her first assignment is with a large trucking broker, a firm which contracts with trucking companies all over the country to haul products for its clients. Her job is to create the programs that will allow the company to move its computer operations from an old mainframe to a PC system. Within a few days, though, she learns that what they really want is a new program that she believes must be illegal, although she’s not entirely sure. Seeking advice, Sheila runs into brick walls everywhere. Her employer is dismissive of her concerns and law enforcement doesn’t seem to be interested; in fact, they treat her with disdain even when real trouble begins with a break-in and assault at her home and a death ruled a suicide when she is sure it’s murder. Fear begins to escalate as Sheila realizes she is being followed and bodies begin to pile up. There is only one person she can trust but she’s going to have to find the evidence herself if she has any chance of surviving. The action in this soft-boiled thriller is nearly constant and the suspense builds to a crescendo that is nearly unbearable but also irresistible. Those of us who are voracious readers have the pleasure of reading many very fine works; most of us, though, don’t ever have the experience of discovering a real gem and that is what this is. Kickback is a joy to read for a number of reasons—great story, wonderful writing, good grammar (which is important to me), a protagonist who could be yourself or your daughter or sister, red herrings galore. This is the author’s first novel and, if it gets the attention it deserves, I expect p. m. terrell will become one of the big names in the mystery field. Reviewed by Lelia Taylor, 2002.

The movies are great, but reading this book first makes them incredible. I've read this one more than once, which is rare for me.

WOW! I can 't believe all of the terrible reviews on this book. I thought it was GREAT! I have read all 5 of the books and I can NOT wait for the 6th to come out. I am pretty darn close to liking this series better than the Twilight series.

Can it be? The lovey-dovey parts were the least interesting! It's the story of a strong-willed young woman who, in order to avenge her family, who've all been murdered by the same madman count (or whatever), flees to France so that she can take up fencing with Europe's greatest master. All she wants to do is fence! And she becomes best friends with a gypsy. But she can't forget the captain of the ship she didn't take across the Channel (and vice versa)... Very fun. No one spoke English, save Captain Fischer, and his was difficult to understand. She was still embarrassed that when he tried to tell her he was of Dutch Hugenot descent and did not allow drinking, dancing, or card playing on his ship, she had to ask him to repeat himself twice. And later... "Why did you never tell me that?" "You never asked me." "What else are you keeping secret?" Alejandro laughed. "I shall not reveal all of my secrets, for their power lies in the keeping of them. I prefer to divulge them one at a time, when the occasion calls for it. Otherwise, they would only serve to bore you." (it bears mentioning that Alejandro is not the leading man, but his feisty Spanish sidekick. Because do they make Spaniards any other way?)
Bought from Amazon, and I still own a copy. APART OF THE GOODREADS 2012 READING CHALLENGE. Review/Rating: 5 out of 5 Ease of Reading Text: 5 out of 5 Illustrations: 5 out of 5 Plot: 5 out of 5 Art Touch-Up: 5 out of 5 Translation: 5 out of 5 Design: 5 out of 5 Rena, a high school student, has a secret she keeps from almost everybody at school. However, when Tomoya finds out she’s a professional mangaka, she asks him out in order to improve her love scenes. But what will happen when she actually falls in love with Tomoya? Side Story 1: Tomoya Okita: A Boy Like in the Comics: We all know that Tomoya is love with Rena, but how was he before having Rena? Was he always the shoujo bishie we all know? Side Story 2: Magical Project: Debut manga of Chitose Yagami. Yuzu is currently going to magic school, but she is not any good at any of the spells. So, when she has to change her pet, Ro, into a human, she tries her hardest. However, he can only change if both of them want it. This manga and the second volume to this series are the only ones I own by Chitose Yagami, and I have to say that I really love them. The artwork looks so amazing. I love how the manga-ka drew the characters (especially Tomoya) and the romance scenes. The kiss scenes looked very yummy and good. And for the Magic Project side story, Yuzu reminds me of Sakura from Card Captor Sakura. xD However, the plot is very cliche in shoujo manga, but I still think it is pretty sweet. I usually like my manga with a lot of romance, kiss scenes, and/or smutty scenes; and this manga has most of that in it. Though because of this, it makes it hard to do a review on shoujo manga, since you can’t say too much or you will ruin everything for people. Anyways, I like how Tomoya teases Rena. It’s so cute since Rena usually “melts”. The characters are all pretty funny and energetic, but sometimes it is kind of annoying — not enough to stop reading though. Overall, pretty much a simple and predictable manga, but it is still pretty good. ;) The side stories were also kind of cute; and I also love the freetalks since they gave tips on how to make manga. :D Now for how VIZ did with bringing this manga into English. VIZ did an excellent job on this one, I hardly have any complaints. The only one is the translation for the “squueee” SFX. ;)

This book was amazing...I really love Capote and the way he told the story just makes it timeless.
