I liked tihs one, however I found it a bit smutty for a period novel. It stands well on its own, I found the sequel wasn't really worth reading.

There's a very hot story in this, but the rest is pretty mediocre.

** spoiler alert ** Review taken from my blog, The Haunting of Orchid Forsythia. First Sentence: As a summer heat scorched the land, the stink of death could be sensed miles away. Prophecy of the Guardian starts off with the the people of Loreladia who are forced to leave their kingdom behind after they suffered a grievous lost during their last battle with the Cullach. One of the most fascinating things about this book, to me, would have to be the Nasharins and when they transformed (or used their unique abilities). I really liked how the three that were mentioned all had different abilities. The pacing of PotG was fairly quick, although there wer a few points when the story seemed to kind of lag. Like when Darshun's training was being covered, but other than that it a pretty quick read. My hope is that in the next book Darshun will have matured a little and that he won't be so easily deceived. Definitely looking forward to seeing where the story will go in the next book, especially since the ending of the first was very open ended. Darshun, I thought he was a pretty okay character. That is until he royally screwed up and let his hormones get in the way...okay so I'm pretty sure the girl is evil and maybe even seduced him, but gosh I just wanted to throttle him near the end of the book. So cross out his idiocy near the end of the book and he's actually a fairly interesting character, but I liked him best when he was a happy-go-luck kind of person. As for Mirabel I found him to be probably the most interesting out of the whole cast. Why, because he had more back story then some of the others, plus his personality was one that seemed to catch your attention more and pull you in. What I liked best about Prophecy of the Guardian were the monsters that the good guys were up against. I thought they were some of the most vile, loathsome creatures that I've read about in a while and the fact that they were absolutely ruthless was a bonus. This might seem like an odd thing for my favorite part of a book, but for me if the villain is weak or sub par it just will not hold my attention. While I really enjoyed reading Prophecy of the Guardian I have just one minor complaint. I felt that there was maybe just a bit too many things added to the mythos of the story, you had wizards who were fallen angels, elves, and horrible creatures all in one book. While it did make for interesting reading to see how everything all tied together, I felt that maybe there were just a few too many different beings in the book. Content (will contain spoilers/highlight to see): This book is relatively clean until the last chapter or two, when Darshun and girl (I forget her name) sleep together. Language, I don't recall any while reading it. Prophecy of the Guardian is also pretty violent at some points (beheading, loss of limbs, just general acts of violence that happen in fantasy books with war). Final Verdict: Prophecy of the Guardian Prophecy of the Guardian earns 4 out of 5 pineapples.

So I’m a huge ghost nerd, and thus you probably need to take my enjoyment of this book with a grain of salt. I would have squee-ed over these photos even if they weren’t accompanied by fun words like "thoughtography" (which occurs when you project your concentrated psychic powers out into space and subsequently produce an image on camera, obviously) and "pareidolia" (when the brain translates a combination of light and shade into something recognizably human, like seeing Jesus in your buttered toast, possibly stemming from an evolutionary need to recognize and interact with other human faces). Each image is accompanied by suitably nebulous responses on the part of the author that in no way reflect his personal bias on the subject. "No truly convincing explanation has ever been given!" "Is there always a logical answer, or could this be the genuine image of an apparition on film?!" "My mind is open, but leaning towards a paranormal occurrence!" "One day, technology could well tell us this apparition is exactly what it seems to be: a genuine paranormal presence!!" My favorite, which went along with the photo of "The Observer At Corroboree Rock," featured the explanation "There is little familiar about the figure, who seems to be dressed in an all-encasing robe and tight-fitting helmet... is this someone from another planet, who allowed himself to be seen?" Yes. Yes, I think it is. OOOOOooooooooooooOOOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooh.... Not as attractive as Casper once he turned into a Real Boy, but I guess I can’t complain....

Okay. Am totally biased. I had such a crush on Jesse Ball when he was at Columbia studying for his MFA. It was a shocker to pass by a bookshelf and see him on it. Now I'm ready for a binge. I remember he was into Kafka, Rilke, Borges--all of whose influence you can see in this fast-paced, quirky, detective novel. For me it's his phrasing of things, as well as the off-kilter images--i.e. man receiving a mask of his own face, girl sewing herself into a sack so she can sleep next to a guy, etc.--that makes the narrative peculiar and intriguing. You can tell Ball's roots are in poetry. Definitely can see the comparison with David Lynch. Wanted more endings--not just the two. But, wow, how amazing to read how Jesse has metamorphosed from the rather shy teacher of an uncredited poetry class to this. Definitely an author to keep an eyeball on.

I gave this book 5 stars not only for itself (though it is very very good), but also for the author. I don't necessarily have a definite favorite of hers, but whenever I'm in a crunch at the library and just want to grab something I KNOW I'll enjoy, I get a Norah Lofts. The really cool thing about her books is that generally they span several generations of people. Now I'm usually not a short-story type reader, but in this case it's really cool because many times she'll stick with a house, and follow who comes and goes in it (the owners) and many times you'll see things tie together in cool ways. Some of her books do not do this but many do and it is always neat. Her books are not always happy, but always great reads. Try one!
