This could have the potential to grow into a series. But I read an interview with Meg Cabot & she pooh-poohed the idea. With that said, the ending is rather abrupt. *sigh*

Wonderfully evocative and rip-roaring. Rip-roaring! Rip-roaring, I tell ye! Early astronauts = luv. Gus Grissom = the hatch just blew! Dennis Quaid, er, Gordo Cooper = the best pilot you ever saw. Five stars, because the movie is glorious and full of cute crewcuts. And because it has Sam Shepard, my Austin honkytonk crony. Girlish glee aside, though, I loved this book. I loved the audacity and the guts and the pilot-speak. Wolfe also does a great job of showing what it's like for a wife to sit at home and wait for the man in the black suit to come and tell her that Cappy's plane took a dive. Plus, I lived at Edwards in the 1980s. Even though Wolfe's describing that base as it was decades earlier, it was exactly as I remembered it. So this book's got everything for me. Physical and mental exertion, male bonding, chimps in space, sonic booms, and the Mojave Desert.

I almost ashamed to admit I finished this book, not because it wasn't a good book, but rather the language was so overwhelmingly awful! Interesting read, but I wouldn't recommend it to any one.

Good book, definitely kept me entertained, and I immediately went on to the 2nd. Strong main character. A couple of pet peeves where she told us all about it, then showed us, then had the main character, Mercy, explain it to someone. By the 2nd book that got better.

I really enjoy DeLillo's style, though here it's not quite enough. There are lovely parts, the quiet personal moments, the struggle to be part of something larger, stronger, a longing for what can no longer be. The disconnected bits of the plot remind me of the papers falling from the towers: a bit of this story, a bit of that, a found article of that first story. The characters are wisps of people, and almost seem secondary, the means to the end. Thoughtful, haunting, yes, but not one DeLillo's best.

This novel is a great political allegory that captures the transitional period between traditional and modern Chinese literature perfectly. I loved the story-teller style, overly dramatic cliff-hangers and all.

o.k. Since I like realistic fiction, i tthought it was good, but not great.

Entertaining, quick read, and also touched on some interesting issues about humanity and its future. When I read it I couldnt help thinking that it was a Brave New World-light, for kids.

It was very refreshing to see a kid's chapter book dealing with the early sixties and the Cuban Missile Crises. I think this book could teach youngsters something about life during those turbulent days, while older readers might enjoy the nostalgia factor. Cool mini bios and pictures were an added bonus. I liked the main character very much. I like how despite it all, she was a normal kid dealing with normal things, like sneaking into her sister's things, tolerating an annoying younger brother who was "perfect", testing friendships, and crushing on a boy. A nice read.
