I loved the characters and the story. It gave a good look at the life of afghanistan women and what they have delt with in the past twenty some years. Thankfully it had a happier ending than The Kite Runner.

This book was a beautiful exploration of family, sisters, love and loss. At first, I found it a little slow moving, and at about the 80 page point there was a character who had been mentioned before, but not in a way that I could remember who he was or what had happened to him (turns out, the author chose to carefully bring him in, bit by bit and that was part of the way the story was written.) It really bothered me that I couldn't remember who he was and I spent an hour or so looking back through the pages I'd read, trying to figure it out. Once I realized that I hadn't forgotten anything, I quickly dove back into the story and was captivated by the love story that began to unfold.

Ya' know, I'm starting to think maybe this whole God thing isn't all true. Well, I've always felt that way with almost 100% confidence, but after reading God: The Failed Hypothesis, I am truly sure that this can be proven. This book is extremely comprehensive. As far as I know, it covers every single argument for the existence of God, and completely demolishes all of them. Not only this, but as the title suggests, it actually proves that god does not, and (perhaps more importantly) cannot exist. Now, I will admit, as I read I did feel that some of the arguments reached their conclusions a bit presumptuously, but rest assured that any gap in logic or potential rebuttal is more than covered in later chapters. I cannot possibly imagine anyone reading this book and still believing, but I know they somehow will. As often happens with science books of this type, some of the chapters in the middle get a bit jargon heavy and tough to follow. Chapter 4, entitled "Cosmic Evidence" was really dense for someone with as basic an understanding of cosmology and particle physics as mine, but the general ideas carried well. This was, however, the only chapter in the book where I felt this way; everything else was very interesting. That being said, a lot of this book is pretty clinical and cold. Stenger is there to address his topic, and he doesn't mess around. However, it does warm up, get more comfortable as the discussion progresses, building to an absolutely beautiful concluding chapter. It gave me one of those science-is-so-awesome smiles to which I am so prone. You absolutely need to read this book, whoever you are.

This is one of Roberts' less recent works, probably re-packaged and re-published after she got more prolific. I always enjoy her writing, but I had a difficult time buying the chemistry in this one. Rich, but not snobby, psychiatrist Dr. Tess Court is asked by her senator grandfather to consult with the police on a serial killer. Ben Paris is the police detective who falls for her. Tess cares a little bit more about her clients than is probably healthy (professional boundaries, anyone?) and even wants to treat the killer once he is caught. Ben's pretty high-handed in his treatment of Tess, but considering the publication date, that's not too out of the ordinary. What really irritated me was the ending. The killer was completely implausible. Quite a disappointment from a usually very reliable author. Fortunately, this book is followed by Brazen Virtue, which I really enjoyed as Ben's partner Ed (not a typical romance hero type) gets to star in his own tale.

I wanted to like this more than I did. It was an OK light novel @ a young girl finding herself. Apart from good descriptions of some of the outfits Dora wore, the vintage info was actually minimal. I liked the idea of the dresses' secret histories but felt some of them were a little 'long-winded'. Found the characters of the Aunt & cousin Tyfanee who wanted to turn the store into a more modern boutique a little too broad & farcical for comfort. Overall the book did not pack sufficient emotional punch to really involve me nor did it have enough description & history of the clothing to appeal on that front.

I read this book, admittedly, after seeing the movie on tv. It seemed like a completely different story. Or rather, that the movie was based on the first 50-100 pages or so of the book. Actually, I only somewhat paid attention to the second half of the movie, so maybe I'm wrong, but anyway, the tone felt completely different. In the book, it seemed like every man was a pervert, sexual predator and misogynist. Which the movie also touched upon, but not nearly as extremely. And I kept being bothered by the narrator's tendency to speak from both the first and third points of view. And I could have done without some of the stream of consciousness writing. When it's an entire narration done that way, I'm fine with that, but breaking into it randomly doesn't do much for me. Past all these complaints, this was definitely a decent read, my first Joyce Carol Oates. And I'm a sucker for strong female protagonists, even if it is their fatal flaw.
