I liked this better than I would have thought, considering my dislike of graduate students who study civil war history.

Until happening across the movie trailer for The Woman in Black, I had never heard of it. I guess that's largely because it was written in the early eighties and wasn't extremely popular. Having read it, I'm not sure why it's made a comeback. But, Daniel Radcliffe is the star of the movie and the trailer does look creepy as hell so I'll probably end up seeing it. I had read some reviews of this book before opening it up, and due to the nature of the reviews, I expected to be terrified. People advised me not to read the book at night if I was home alone. They said I'd be looking around corners and sleeping with the lights on and all manner of nonsense. Well I did read the book at night, alone, and while I did enjoy the writing style very much and appreciated the "old timey" feel of the ghost story, I was by no means scared. After closing the book, I shut out the lights and got into bed. No woman in black appeared in my room, at least not to my knowledge ;) The story is very short. Less than 200 pages, which made for a very fast read. It's easy to believe, while reading this, that it was, in fact, written in the late 1800's/early 1900's so that is a definite plus. The way Susan Hill describes everything is superb, imo. I especially loved the first chapter entitled Christmas Eve. There were a few passages in that chapter that made me feel the crisp winter air and smell the woodsmoke outside and see the twinkling stars above. Mrs. Hill is definitely a talented author and this book was an entertaining ghost story. Just..not scary. More quaint and again, "old timey." Kind of like ghost stories you'd tell around a fire. The story is very predictable and Are You Afraid of the Dark -esque. (Although infinitely more grim). But it just had the feel of a tale told to frighten young children. I did enjoy it very much though and I'm sure the movie will be immensely scarier. Judging from the trailer alone, there is at least one scene that definitely did not happen in the book and was quite unnerving. So I look forward to that.

This book wasn't great but I liked learning about other neighborhoods in Chicago that I never make it too. I'd like to take a tour of the Pullman area and I learned of a restaurant on the west side I'd like to try. Cicero also sounds like a crazy place. The book was pretty light and probably not as memorable as "There are no Children Here" but it's still worth reading.

very enjoyable. 4.321* the other side of urban fantasy. far from horror and closer to thriller and adventure for me. lesson learnt: human is the real monsters, and ghouls. werewolves and vampires and winged mummies are the good guys. I read this with my 9-year-old daughter, at her request. I didn't like the movie at all, so I wasn't too excited about the book to be honest. But I went ahead and I actually quite enjoyed it - it's a very unique idea and fun at a kid's level. Should you read it? Well, that just depends on whether or not you have a child to read with. :)

Some people love it, some people don't. I don't. Couldn't even finish it, as a matter of fact. I realized after about 100 pages that if I wasn't laughing now, I wouldn't be further into the story. Had to put it down.

Having been given this book as a Christmas present from my best friend, and as one of his favourite trilogies, I was intrigued as to what I would think. Having never read anything from these authors before, I had no real idea what to expect with regards to their styles, or characterisations, etc, so was ready to expect the unexpected. After the few first chapters in, I was unsure what to make of this book. It is very politically involved within the world that it is set, and contains lots of strong characters which, at first, I struggled to get to grips with. At this point, I was starting to feel a little concerned that I would end up not enjoying this book, and it would be one of 'those issues' forever-more between my friend and I, but I continued on with it.. and I'm so glad I did. Once I finally got to grip with the characters, and got involved with them, and the environment in which they are placed, I got very attached to the main character in the story. The young lady suffers many trials, and setbacks whilst trying to retain her families honour and dignity, and you really see her grow throughout the book. This really is one fantasy novel like nothing I've read in the genre before, and I must say I did enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the trilogy plays out. Overall: Lovely environments, excellent drama, great characterisation, and a plot full of intrigue, loyalty, love, honour, and murder. I'm really pleased I've had the pleasure of reading it, and if you fancy reading something a little different than the norm from this genre, I would recommend it.

I enjoyed this historical fiction based on a real life divorce trial from the 1800's. The book jacket compares the drama to the Clinton affair, and it's not far off, boasting contemporary issues in a Victorian setting.

An interesting history of 19th century business and philanthropy, and an enjoyable story. However, the book needs a good editor to help fine-tune some rough sections. I'm sure the Hershey company would disagree, but in places, the author could take a more questioning/critical approach.
