This was a nice story but at times I felt like there was no real passage of time & then bam-we were a year into the story. I liked the details about the shoes & loved the Italy part but it left me wanting more....I wish we could do 1/2 stars-I would give it a 3.5....

One of those books that makes you realize that fact is stranger than fiction. A crazy story about a mother in the Midwest in the 50s who raised 10 kids with little help from her alcoholic husband, by winning contests. A fun uplifting read, and especially appropriate around Mother's day.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen is about a girl by the name of Ruby Cooper, who had been living by herself in a little house ever since her mom left her unexpectedly. Once the police found out she was living by herself, she was forced to go live with her sister, Cora, who she hadn’t seen since she was ten years old. She was very reluctant to leave her home, but after a teacher at her new school assigns her a project on family, she learns more about her mom, and sister that she never knew before. I would call this book contemporary fiction. The plot wasn’t hard to follow at all, and held my attention the whole way through. I liked the fact that it was written in first person, because you can see the entire story from one person’s point of view, like it’s actually happening to you. I would recommend this book to any of the girls in class.

I wanted to read this book to try to get a different perspective on stripping. I've always been against it, especially for one reason in particular--it's the only profession where women make more than men. It just perpetuates the idea of women as sexual objects. After reading this book it only reinforced my beliefs more. It was interesting but is a bit graphic, just to warn you. Some of the stories are a bit shocking.

It's an easy read - short essays that look critically at education in the US, the history that led us to this point, even how economics involves environmentalism. I recommend checking this one out.
