Read parts of this - it's the biography that I believe was the basis for the movie. Interesting, with lots of background on the era, political, social times.

I loved this book, I read it because if Twilight but it is its own world. I would love to see more to this book, it would be a world I could get sucked into again. It took a bit for the pace to pick up and I like a book that makes me not want to put it down, half way in I was hooked and speant hours reading to finish it. I was sad to see the end. But it proved again that Stephenie Meyer is amazing.

First, the good: frank talk about teenage girls' sexual lives, exploration of double standards, inspiration from a classic (I'm a sucker for modern re-tellings). The bad? It took me a long while to feel as if I could relate to the protagonist at all. It seemed like her only personality trait for a good portion of the book was having a boyfriend. Finally, we find out she's also a control freak who works in a library (just like me! ha!) But seriously, the fact that every single girl in this book (with the exception of the "slut") has an athlete boyfriend really bugged me. They talk about the question of what is normal for a teenage girl in terms of sex. There's the girl who does it with her boyfriend, the girl who does "everything but" with her boyfriend, the girl who is waiting to do it with her boyfriend, and the girl who does it with lots of guys but doesn't tie herself down to one boyfriend. What about the plain ol' girl who has no guy (or guys) in her sex life? If I'd read this when I was a teenager, I'd tell all these chicks to shut up and stop complaining. At least you have boyfriends! The grownup me realizes that half of their boyfriends are total dicks.

I love Tom Robbins, but there is something about this book I could not get into. The tale of a waitress/artist and the man who loved her, it has some great imagry ("Some women have bedroom eyes, Ellen Cherry had bedroom hair"), but I just couldn't get into it. If you have not been exposed to Robbins before, my advice is to read some of his other works, like "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates."

I've read Jane Eyre - this is the second adaption that I've read. As a warning, I'm not going to be super-tight lipped about plot developments because this is a retelling - if I feel I need to talk about an aspect that will ruin the punch line, I will. If you've read the actual book, you shouldn't be surprised by what I reveal. This will serve as a spoiler warning - proceed at your own risk. Here's the front flap summary: Forced to drop out of an esteemed East Coast college after the sudden death of her parents, Jane Moor takes a nanny job at Thornfield Park, the estate of Nico Rathburn, a world-famous rock star on the brink of a huge comeback. Practical and independent, Jane reluctantly becomes entranced by her magnetic and brooding employer and finds herself in the midst of a forbidden romance. But there's a mystery at Thornfield, and Jane's much-envied relationship with Nico is soon tested by an agonizing revelation from his past. Torn between her feelings for Nico and his fateful secret, Jane must decide: Does being true to herself mean giving up on true love? An irresistible romance interwoven with a darkly engrossing mystery, this contemporary retelling of the beloved classic Jane Eyre promises to enchant a new generation of readers. Well, I don't think that this book enchanted me, but it wasn't bad. I like Lindner's reinvented Jane - she's smart, artistic, and a little bit unsure of herself. However, I have a hard time seeing someone so meak in a modern day situation. I mean, sure, anyone can be shy, but how she reacts to Nico is just so weird. I didn't like the guy who asks her to marry him (other than Nico) at all - he was weird almost creepy, as in creepier than I found Nico, which is pretty creepy. When I read the Jane Eyre, I'm pretty sure I wanted Jane to fall for him. I didn't this time. While Nico is creepy, Nico's daughter is so cute! Maddy is probably my favorite character. Just because she's adorable. There were a few other plot-twists that I didn't like at all. I won't reveal them, but most of them were near the end. Also, Nico's house isn't as creepy as it should be, in my opinion. A house that has a pool can't be all that eerie. I really liked Nico's band, though. That whole concept is really cool. I feel like I'm being a bit hard on this book. If this wasn't a retelling, I probably would have had a lot fewer negative things to say, but since it is a retelling, I'm comparing it every step of the way. I don't really like retellings; the author told it the right way, now you should think up your own story. I like it when people write sequels (sometimes), especially if I really want to know what happens next. While the twists she made were interesting, looking back she didn't do enough and was sort of ripping off the author.

Cute - British - Chicklit. This (and all of Holden's books) were great for reading on the metro - they really distracted me from the job I had at the time, which I hated! I recommend all of her books - not for brainfood, but for fun/escape/vacation reading.
