I did not love this book as much as I wanted to, however its worth a read if you're in to food things. I particularly liked Buford's stint as a butchers' apprentice.

1776 is not a novel in the traditional sense. It is told entirely by a narrator. There is no dialogue and you frequently will see both sides of the war depicted. It is more a compilation of historical documents than anything, but don’t let that make you think that this is a history textbook. It is anything but that. It is as compelling as any thriller. It genuinely made me happy when the rebels took Dorchester heights and made me depressed after the long series of retreats that they suffer through (although that may be my already-existing sympathy for my home country). This book also made me feel an incredible amount of respect for the entire rebel army. Their perseverance throughout everything that they suffered, to the point where most would have given up hope, (and many did) is amazing. Especially for George Washington is this true. I’m not a military buff, but I haven’t heard of a more devoted general. If it weren’t for him, his strict disciplinary work and his willingness to put his own life on the line, I wonder if we would have an America today.

I actually couldn't get into his other books, but I thought this one was excellent. It's the story of an archaeological dig in Israel, but the book is basically two parallel stories--one from ancient times and one from modern day. In essence, one reads the story of what really happened in the area and is thus "in" on the secret of how certain items came to be buried where they are. At various intervals, the story switches to modern day and one reads about the archaeologists attempting to infer the actual story (that you now know) from the findings. I should say that the stories are converging rather then parallel; they do meet at the end in a satisfying way. Though the book is certainly dense and contains an incredible amount of detail, the two-stories-at-once plan in this novel really works to make it consistently interesting.

** spoiler alert ** Foundational. Rachel's comment about how it was just a list of good business practices is key. The fact that a marketing book is saying this is a major shift in the field of thought. No gimmicks, just good business. One thing I didn't like was that on page 109 he recommends that you use interrupt marketing emails to try and garner attention and have things go 'viral'. This is wrong. You're wasting people's time and attention. Seth Godin's idea of a "permission asset" is much more powerful. Critical. Quotes: "Earn the respect and recommendation of your customers, and they will do the rest. Treat people well; they will do your marketing for you, for free. Be interesting, or be invisible." "Word of mouth marketing only works if you have good products and services. It only works if people like you and trust you...If your product or service sucks, no PR campaign, clever TV ad, or announcement on your website will make consumers believe that it doesn't. Not anymore." "Giving people a reason to talk about your stuff and making it easier for that conversation to take place." "Provide amazing products. Provide excellent service. Go the extra mile. Make the experience remarkable." "Make it easy. You need to do two things: Find a super-simple message, and help people share it...Anything longer than a sentence is too much. It'll get forgotten or mangled." "If you are being sneaky or deceptive, you will get busted. Consumers today are incredibly savvy and independent, with the information and resources to catch you in a lie and tell everyone about it." "The Word of Mouth Marketing Manifesto: 1. Happy customers are your best advertising. Make people happy. 2. Marketing is easy. Earn the respect and recommendation of your customers. They will do your marketing for you, for free. 3. Ethics and good service come first. 4. UR and UE: You are the user experience (not what your ads say you are). 5. Negative word of mouth is an opportunity. Listen and learn. 6. People are already talking. Your only option is to join the conversation. 7. Be interesting, or be invisible." 8. If it's not worth talking about, it's not worth doing." 9. Make the story of your company a good one. 10. It is more fun to work at a company that people want to talk about. 11. Use the power of word of mouth to make business treat people better. 12. Honest marketing makes more money." "When she walks out the door, what have I given her to talk about. How will he remember to tell his friends? Could I have made it easier for her to talk to more people about me? Was anything about his experience remarkable." "Say thank you...I'm not talking about gifts, compensation, or cash rewards. I'm talking about recognition and gratitude." "People rarely criticize a product they helped build." (Cog-dis, is this a good thing?) "Most marketing departments aren't organized to accept input from customers or to engage in conversations with them. That's usually customer service's job...Marketing and customer service have to learn to work together if word of mouth is going to work for you...Big Idea: Word of mouth is as much about customer service as it is about marketing." "Never sell...Follow the rules...Say who you are." "For every person whom a happy customer talks to...an unhappy customer tells five people. A formerly unhappy customer who is made happy tells ten people." "Big Idea: Fixing problems is the most powerful marketing you can do."

I was a little bored by the first 200 pages, but got through it because I was so invested in the story. The series over all was amazing. Book 2 was my favorite, but I've liked them all. There are many REALLY disturbing and graphic scenes, so I don't recommend this series to everyone. The writing was fantastic and the story line was so engaging. There were times that I couldn't keep everyone and everything straight, but in the end it all came together.

I guess there was a plot. But I think it was all a thinly veiled cover for writing about an old man's penis. Seriously. Every page includes some reference to this horny old man's sexual escapades. It's gross. And a little depressing. Which is...provocative. I guess. EDIT: I redacted my initial hatred-filled review. I might even consider re-reading this, from a non-sophomoric* perspective. *I was a sophomore in high school when I first read this and hated it...

Interesting concept, well written, but a little to long. The plot gets thin and weak towards the latter half and I found myself reading just to finish it not for the joy of the story.

Written by Kili Goff in that tiny span of time - just after Biden called Obama "articulate" and right before Obama was elected, this will be an interesting read. I'm going to wait a while to read it though; after the newness of Obama being president wears off.

This is the best read I have had all summer. I picked up the advance reading copy at the ALA Convention in June. The cover promised great things (won the Bellwether Prize, positive review from Barbara Kingsolver), so I anticipated a great read. This did not disappoint. I warn everyone that the novel concerns great tragedy, but the ending presents hope. I look forward to more stories from Benaron!
