Das Buch gibt einen wichtige Überblick, man merkt aber, dass es nicht aus einem Guss ist. Ursprünglich von mehreren Autoren verfasst, stammt es inzwischen zwar aus einer Hand aber man merkt, dass nicht alle Abschnitte mit den neuen Auflagen überarbeitet wurden. Ebenso findet man immer wieder Wiederholungen und man merkt der Autor liebt die Konsole mehr als das GUI. Das ist zwar nachzuvollziehen aber dem Umsteiger von Windows wird er so die Angst nicht nehmen - hat Linux doch seit jeher den Ruf ein System für Freaks zu sein. Natürlich eine gute Referenz und besonders nett, dass es als Open-Book zur Verfügung steht, aber als Druckwerk um € 40 erscheinen mir die Schwächen durchaus als erwähnenswert.

I received this book through the goodreads freebies. I love this book. The way the charactors go through memories in their lives and have such clear strong feelings for eachother. It is a wonderful read for trip or rainy day. Although the couple is put through trials and tribulations of war and the strength of family ties, emotions of losing friends and loved ones, you are still shown the passion to survive and live on.

I now have a reason to never pick up another Anne Rice novel again. Tried to read this, but after half way and still bored with the droning on, I quit. As a coworker said, we're not in school anymore we don't have to read books that cannot capture us and keep us entertained. On to a better book.

I can see what got reviewers excited about this book. French's writing is smart and sharp, and she sets up a very convincing world, with characters you can (at least at first) care about. It's quite amazing as a first novel. But if you're a mystery fan, or simply a reader who expects a plot to come to closure, you'll end up wanting to throw this book across the room. (I don't think it's a spoiler to reveal that the mystery at the center of Rob's life is never resolved, for all the chewing-over it gets.) Overall, the book reads like French didn't have complete control over her material. There are some huge red herrings that seem to be less intentionally false leads than plot lines that French started to explore and then didn't know what to do with. The entire book, for that matter, seems to have gotten away from her -- for all that it's meant to be a murder mystery, it winds up in large part being an extended riff on an impossibly good woman done wrong by a flawed man.

I first hesitated - like I always do when it comes to great books - whether to give it 4 stars or go all out and give it 5. I went to look at my 'Read' shelf and saw that if the sequels of A Game of Thrones got five stars, so should this. And then I saw that if Leviathan (& the other Westerfeld books) got four stars, so should this. Finally, I saw that I need to take a closer look at the stars I've been giving my read books (and maybe be a bit more generous when it comes to 5 stars). For now I'm giving this 4. Could change. Wow. Quite a bit of exposition - loved every letter of it. Fascinating world, great characters, shocking (crushing?) ending, got me in tears, awesome awesome awesome. Why did I give this 4 stars again? Will review later. Do have some minor nitpicks, but don't even care myself. Typos happen, as do the occasional clichés. Whatever. Will be reading the sequels.

Although a bit of an anachronism, GAMAY is interesting in that it shows the trend toward secularism (anti-religion) and collectivism (anti-capitalism) that has been de rigeur on American college campi since shortly after WWII. I was surprised that it fell that way so soon after a battle with godless totalitarianism, but American higher education has always been, apparently, eager to flirt with disaster. A look at "higher" education in America today would shock even Buckley, who, at 25, just two months out of Yale himself when he wrote this (and what a vocabulary, even then!), presciently predicted this lamentable outcome. The fact that Yale began as a college to educate Congregationalislt ministers, and its own administration so thorougly and completely abdicated any religious responsibility toward its student body (in direct contravention to its own bylaws) shows how feckless and perhaps even hostile these same men have been toward the origins of their own employer. No wonder the student radicalism of the 1960s gained such a foothold at Yale; the administration themselves had lost all sense of value or tradition. An interesting aside: Buckley's youthful but still well-reasoned arguments were never countered by his critics; they merely resulted in the endless, screeching, and pathetic ad hominem attacks he so blithely suffered throughout his long, productive life, jabbing his fingers into the eyes of the liberal establishment (an establishment that began at Yale itself), all the while quoting Latin and smiling. He is sorely missed as a keen representative of what has become, thanks to his alma mater, the "alternative" view, conservatism.
