Etched in Bone by Adrian Phoenix Urban Fantasy- Feb. 22nd, 2011 3 ½ stars This story is the forth in the Maker’s Song series. As a newbie to the series I was impressed by the complexity of the world the author created but this also made it difficult to keep up with the storyline. This book starts out with a bang as the heroine, FBI agent Heather Wallace is unknowingly betrayed by her family in the first two chapters. The rest of the book backtracks to the days before this tragic event and mainly features Heather’s lover Dante. Dante is faced with some very torturous changes as he is pulled from all sides. But his one reprieve is his love for Heather. Gritty, dark and filled with drama and despair. I liked the gutsy heroine and could feel her courage, pain and anguish. Dante is more of a mysterious character who is definitely sexy. I liked how multifaceted this novel was but this also ensured that I had to concentrate to follow it. I am conflicted about this book because while I give the author kudos for the seamy world and interesting characters, the storyline did not have a real payoff at the end. This made me feel a bit cheated. I wish the author had made the early chapters and ending a separate book and not added them to the rest of the storyline. I understand this is an Urban Fantasy series but usually authors have more resolve at the end than this horrendous cliffhanger. Because of this, and not having read the previous books, the story eventually frustrated me in many ways. If you are a fan of this series, I believe you will love this book. But if you haven’t read this series yet I would start with one of the earlier books first or maybe wait to read this book after the next book comes out.
