The Brothers Karamazov is really Dostoyevsky at his best. I may be a little partial to this book because I did my senior thesis on it. I've always loved Russian novels, maybe it is because of how dramatic they are, or the ten names they give to every character, or because the characters deal with conflicts that most of us face. In the Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky shows that there is good and evil in every person, a person has moral choices to make. His characters struggle with their vices, fallibility, they question the idea of God and Christianity in society. Each character faces their own demons and their ideals change and develop throughout the novel as they try to figure out answers to the "eternal" questions. I love the book because it's real, it's not a fantastical story to past time, but a exploration of how people deal with conflicts within themselves and society. Here are some of my favourite quotes: " A beast can never be so cruel as a man" " One can love one's neighbors in the abstract, or even at a distance" " For if there is no everlasting God, there's no such thing as virtue. and there is not need of it"

As Carradine digs up the documentation, Grant ponders the evidence and how it all fits together and who would stand to gain by the princes’ death. Actor Derek Jacobi gives a superb reading. His American accent for Carradine is good, if not perfect, but Grant and all the other British characters are flawless. If they put up a statue of Misty in the town where Jeffrey Brown was born, I would hug it until it's head came off, then leave the head by the side of the road, confessing it was an accident later on. The simpleness of Jeff's layout and his observational gifts make what should be Campy schlock into a pleasant read. Also, no whining.

I really enjoyed the unbiased view of world religions. John proved that although a Christian himself, he is able to set his own beliefs aside and provide an untainted description of what the other religions are about, their beliefs, their practises, their ideas. And not from a stand point of Christianity, but from a neutral point. Giving each religion their own space. He proved to me that to say: "all religions are really the same" is not a true statement and to say it is doing a disservice to all religions and proves one's own ignorance. Johns idea that "true tolerance of religions" is not all about saying: "I'm right and so are you" as this would be stretching the truth. But tolerance is about saying:"I believe this, you believe that, and we can still all get along and accept that we believe different things." A book every religious person ought to read for two reasons. One to get rid of any remaining ignorance about what other religions actually believe in. And two to foster true tolerance between religious groups.
