My first read by this author. Good book, engaging, with lots of twists and turns, and overall kept me wanting more. I learned a lot from this historical novel and felt like I was there. That's what I appreciate from these historical things. I'd compare it to Anne Rice's "Pandora" in some ways.

I decided to deviate from my usual fare of food literature and relatively undemanding fiction to read Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Were I still in college, I could imagine myself reading this book and writing a paper (several papers actually) on it. I enjoyed the novel best as a meditation on relationships: Tomas' contemplation on whether his relationship with Tereza is part of his destiny (es muss sein), or merely the result of a series of coincidences; Tereza's desire to transcend the body and achieve that "lightness", Sabina and Franz's inability to comprehend each other given their very different vocabularies. Less compelling for me were Kundera's philosphical musings on topics like freedom, choice, including a rather lengthy meditation on the nature of kitsch.

This book had a very intersesting perception of vampirism. They viewed it as a disease that people caught over the centuries with an undercover group curing them with perscriptions. Intriguing!
