I loved this series! Fantasy is my son's favorite genre, and reading what he reads is good for both of us. Brandon Mull is more than just entertaining, he's teaching young people great lessons in subtle ways. I highly recommend this book to any age or gender!

I thought this book was awesome! it had a lot of action and pizzaz. I think it does a really good job describing things and making you feel like your actually in the book. I really liked the plot and the outline of the whole thing. overall this book was GREAT!

Not since Monk have we had such a unique person with OCD solving a mystery. This is a story with so many layers - family issues, personal issues, a murder mystery, love, truth, and more. The main character, Lo (aka Penelope) is definitely not the normal teenage protagonist. She was heavily affected by her brother's death. Always a little OCD, it ramped up big time leaving her struggling to get through a day. The constant flow of her OCD tics (tap tap tap, banana, groups of three, but not six or eight, etc.) gets a little disconcerting, and even distracting, but it is part of the character, and since she's the main character, it's necessary. Lo is inexplicably drawn to certain items. Due to this, she ends up mired in the middle of a murder investigation. Kate Ellison builds a world and story that will draw you in. Things I liked: the overall story, the representation of someone with OCD, the satisfying ending. What I didn't like: first person, present tense. Not my favorite point of view, but the story is good enough to almost make me overlook that. Recommendation: It's a good story with quirky characters and a believable mystery and satisfying ending. Good for older teens.

I'm not completely finished with this book but I am finding it even more engrossing then the first one. I wasn't prepared for this book to pick up exactly where the first book ended. I was still reeling with the shock that Julia had sent Hadassah to the lions. Julia's character is probably the most insolent character I have ever read. Her inability to think of anyone beyond herself shocks me. The sad part is that so many people behave the same way she does. They put their life and their possessions ahead of God (myself included). It's because of this that her character is so necessary. We all desire to live as Hadassah but our free will results in us making other choices. This book, as the first, weaves together a story that brings the pivotal characters ultimately to Christ. This book came to me when I was also questioning my purpose. Great book for all!

King is very poetic, which is really "cute." But this book was confusing! I don't like books that are written like this. I know I'm pretty smart, but when I read a passage twice because I can't find out why so-and-so died, that's ridiculous. I felt stupid reading this...like I was just too dumb to figure it out. And I KNOW I'm not dumb. The ONLY reason I'm going to continue with the series is because (1) my husband has read through all of them and loved them, (2)we own them so they're THERE, and (3) because he said it starts to make sense eventually. My husband loved the series immensely and said, "It starts to get really good in the third one." I'm all for building suspense and intrigue, but seriously...it takes three books to even be good!? That's a bit overkill. If I'm bored and there's absolutely nothing left to do, I'll get the next one out.

It's a collection of Gen-X essays on all my favorite things -- including why baseball is vastly superior to soccer (an essay where I quite nearly lost bladder control) and how Pamela Anderson is our generation's Marilyn Monroe (I'm still aghast at the comparison). It also is one of a VERY few book recommendations my brother ever gave to me -- so it's on the list.

XP So, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are working in Lucky Smells Lumbermill eating barely anything and getting paid in coupons by their horrible gaurdian, Sir, who has a name too long to be pronounced. And guess who comes back? Yay.
