I got this book after the bishop who wrote it preached a great homily at the seminary where I was teaching. It is a good read, particularly for devotees of Therese of Lisieux and for seminarians.

While I'm sure that the author had an amazing experience living in China, the story that she tells is still the one that Westerners on the outside want to hear. Parts of the book are definitely repetitive, but I'm not sure whether the author or the editor are to blame.

Sloppy first novel promises what it can't deliver. Though the tropes and themes in this novel are intelligent, they are ultimately under developed. Murphy produced a leviathan of a beginning and middle that was too big to be brought to fruition by the end of this book. If you're looking for yet another story about a bored bogger raised by a tough-love Irish mom, this is for you. Otherwise don't believe the hype--this book is highly overrated.

A typical Victorian mystera with a set-up to a series. An easy read with a somewhat unexpected ending. Not for the guys I don't think.

A humorous and satirical look at our country, the ideals it was based on, those who founded it, and how it compares to other areas of the world. Unless you are already an expert on America, democracy and everything pertaining to it, you will find yourself wondering whether the information contained in this book is the truth, or a joke. The answer to that question is, "yes." I had to resort to an internet search more often than I care to admit, but I found that I learned more by being prompted by my ignorance of their point than I would have from reading a dry text book. The design is early elementary school textbook, which I found quite entertaining. The "Were You Aware" margin notes were especially hilarious, as were the footnotes. It's unfortunate; however, that in order to point out distressing truths about our 'great nation' the authors were forced to resort to humor. I have long been a fan of the Daily Show because, albeit in the guise of 'comedy', they are not afraid to engage in the kind of true and necessary journalism that the 'legitimate' media seems to have let fall by the wayside. This book is an extension of that aim, and accomplishes it's purpose quite well. Note: This book sits on our coffee table, with works by Bill Maher, Michael Moore, and Al Franken. It's what we like to call 'The Coffee Table of Leftism"

Fuck Ayn Rand. You're an asshole if you like her philosophy or her books. End of story.

Another of the books set in India that I bought when I ordered "Shantaram." I enjoyed it but am noticing a pattern with these books -- life in the "dark areas" -- and the ways people have to live to survive -- through crime, bribes, whatever -- and some make it out of the "slums." The "White Tiger," winner of the Man Booker prize, is well written and has an interesting style of telling its story. Do I recommend it? YES!

I can never get enough of this series!! Once again, I was immersed into a world of wonderment, fantasy, magic and pure greatness!! Cassandra Clare has done it again! First I was torn between Team Jace or Team Simon, and NOW, I'm torn between Team Will or Team Jem!!! For some reason, choosing between Will & Jem, is MUCH harder than choosing between Jace or Simon, because I ultimately chose Jace! I was first heartbroken, to find out what Will's secret was, only to be even more heart broken and angry to learn that it was all a lie! That the curse on him never existed and that he had spent the last 5 years, in misery, for nothing. Pushing people away, acting out, making believe he didn't care for others, leaving his family, blaming the death of his sister on himself, only to have it thrown back in his face, that it was all for nothing. I've liked Will from the moment we "met" him. He's been very entertaining and for whatever reason it was, I could always see through him and see that he did indeed have a huge heart, that he loved and just wanted love. I mean, how could you not, knowing all he did and felt for his paratabi Jem. Then there's Jem. Oh Jem. I fell for Jem even more in this book. Classy, stable, sweet, Jem. Who wouldn't? The love he has for Tessa is so pure and innocent. It almost makes you feel bad for him, because you know that even though Tessa does love him, and YIKES, agrees to marry him, that her heart truly lies with Will. AHHHHHHHH Speaking of....Too little too late, on Will's part, huh?? When Tessa & Will had that talk, I almost cried. So saddened for Will, but I felt respect for Tessa, for standing up for her end of the deal with Jem. I know she loves Jem as well, and did it mostly because she never thought she'd have Will, but Tessa NOT going back on her word, means something to me. She's a girl of trust and honor. Even if it is, breaking her heart. The whole Mortiman war is getting even more intense, and it's actually really good. I cannot believe that Jessamine was a spy and that she was going against Charlotte, Henry and the whole institute. How sad. I knew there was something up with her, and I specifically didn't really like her, but to know that she did that, is just horrible. I'm happy she's with the Silent Brother's now. She deserves it, after all she did. Not to mention, GOOD RIDDANCE to Nate. Finally. They got rid of him. I know he's Tessa's brother, but he was long gone, a long time ago. Loving the little romance between Sophie & Gideon. Hope that ends well. And I'm starting to assume that Gabriel will be giving us some trouble. Leave it to the Lightwoods, huh? LOL As always. Great to see Magnus again, as always. The ending left me shocked!! I cannot wait to see what's going to happen, now that Ciecly is at the Institute!!! And what's going to happen with Will, Jem & Tessa. Not to mention, the whole Mortiman and his Automons war!!! Hopefully Benedict gets his too!! Cant' wait for Clockwork Princess!!!

A little boring and long.

It took me four months to read this book. Four months - that I'm never getting back. "Boring from start to finish" is what I want to say, but I'm pretty sure I kind of enjoyed a few pages in the middle. Unbiased review, or what?
