I love this book. The parallel lives of two little girls who live half a world away is a great way to show how despite our differences, we share many things in common. The factual information in the back of the book gives added dimension to the story and allows the reader to locate the girls' lives in time and space. Each story also emphasizes the rewards of daily life, chores, relaxation and family. On top of that, we get a little horticultural knowledge about cocoa! When my daughter saw a cacao tree on a visit to a botanical garden she identified it immediately from having heard about it in this book.

Gorgeous period setting, great characters, great pacing of the romance between the two main characters. I absolutely loved this book.

I just finished the first of the four novellas "The Langoliers". As with all Stephen King stories, I loved it.

You don't have to be a Stephen King fan to enjoy The Stand. You do have to have a lot of time. I read the unabridged version and it was a great read. Tons of interesting characters, lots of plot twists and turns, plenty of gore. It also took me weeks to read this (and I'm a fast reader). On the up side, it will tone your arms while you read as just holding it up is exercise.

Pygmalion meets Frankenstein: a sensitive, depressed novelist (yes, one of those) whose previous relationship has ended in shambles finds himself teaching a "neural net" to interpret literature as well as any human graduate student. I enjoyed it a great deal several years ago and found it thought provoking. It's lovely, and as self-involved as lovely writing will allow. I'm pretty indulgent.

Elaine Dundy knows how to capture a scene. The parts of the book where something is actually happening work like gangbusters. The dialogue is clever but realistic. The details are pertinent but also hilarious. Most of the first chapter is a really long scene between the narrator and her new crush as they chat at a Paris café. If you are anything like me, this scene will pull you in. And you’ll assume that the rest of the book will continue in this fashion. But the book has other plans. Every so often there will be another great scene, well-told, but most of the time you’ll find yourself skipping over large paragraphs of filler material and plot twists that seem kind of pointless. This will depress you because the narrator’s dry sense-of-humor had such promise early on. But now that you know the story isn’t going anywhere, what’s the point? This book has a pseudo-memoir feel to it, and when memoirs have structural problems, you can’t really blame them because, hey, that’s life. Life is messy. Novels shouldn’t be.

good book, similar style to the davinci code but not as much of a page turner. it was a fun read though.
