I was scared to read this..... But ended up loving it. It was different and not what I expected and I think my rating is more 4-1/2. I wouldn't mind reading a sequel!

Great opening which later, unfortunately, loses steam and gives way for ridiculous premise, wrapped in half-assed writing. Guillermo del Toro, should leave the writing to professionals, and stick to filmmaking. (view spoiler)

This science fiction book was interesting and well written, but I found the pace rather frustrating. The story starts out rather slow since there are a lot of characters that Anderson introduces you to before they seem important. Plus, the teaser on the book jacket is more of a synopsis. It is obviously not a stand-alone book, but I look forward to reading the next one.

This story is told through the eyes of a dog. A must read for everyone who has (or had) a dog they love -- I am sure all of us have looked at our dog and said "What must he/she be thinking?" Read the book and you might find out...I loved it!

I absolutely loved this book! Until the end, that is. I like to have room for imagination in short stories with shallow characters, but when I am reading a series for 500 page books long, I would have at least expected a two page epilogue. Despite the extremely disappointing end, I loved this book. The characters were just too well developed to end without a firm direction for Paolini. I guess it just comes down to me wanting more from such a great series.

Talk about twists & turns--Patterson has once again kept me thinking I had everything figured out only to be surprised again and again. Loved the ending.

"One of the new things people began to find out in the last century was that thoughts - just mere thoughts - are as powerful as electric batteries - as good for one as sunlight is, or as bad for one as poison. To let a sad thought or a bad one get into your mind is as dangerous as letting a scarlet fever germ get into your body. If you let it stay there after it has got in you you may never get over it as long as you live." I found this book browsing through my mother in law's library and realized I had never read it. It sounded intriguing so I picked it up. It was a little hard for me to get into at first. The author's or Mary's description of India and the "natives" irritated and sometimes offended me much like reading Khalil Gibran or Rudyard Kipling offends me. I muddled through, battled my urge to burn the book and surprisingly found a sweet jewel of a book. I liked bringing my childhood mind back to the forefront and getting lost in fantasy and dreams. I love how the garden was also a character that reflected the hearts and physical nature of Mary and Colin. Through their belief that the garden could be full and glorious again they themselves developed physically, emotionally and spiritually. I think we all have a "secret garden." The room in the house that's just filled with stuff and mess that you'd rather not deal with. The heart that doesn't let anyone too close. The mind that refuses to believe anything is possible. The long forgotten childhood dreams stuck admist the cobwebs and traffic of the daily doldrum. The letters I haven't written. The book that I haven't started. The unforgiveness that I have held onto. It all starts with a thought.

I read the House of Night series up until this volume, and then I couldn't take it anymore. Zoey is a horrible narrator, and as a heroine even worse. Really, she's selfish, the epitome of selfishness even. How she treats all these poor guys is horrible, the way she strings them along and uses them as she pleases. Let's not talk about her hypocrisy, and the way she treats her friends. I had to force myself to keep reading and just get it over with. My sister recommended these books to me, and told me they'd be getting better, but I'm not in for a try. The first one was enjoyable; but it went downhill from there. No more Zoey for me. Take your goddamn boy troubles and leave, bitch.

wonderful kids or adult story - like the back of the book says - a great modern fairy tale... (but sadly its imagery is a bit scary for the imaginative 7 year old i take care of, and i won't be reading it to him)
