I tried to read this book in 2006 and left it because of an extended opening metaphor that I didn't like (about anxiety). I picked it up again this year and in a few days finished it. It turned out to be the best book I've read in a very long time, if not my favorite book. Ever. It's a dark, searing, funny, depressing honest account of what it means (at least to me) to have grown up in a middle-class American family with siblings and what it means to live in America today. Franzen treats every character -their past, their longings, and their relationships - with respect and skill. Bit by bit, you get to know them as people struggling to deal with their lives and each other - and eventually coming together for one last time together at Christmas, that most American holiday.
